Foreign Aid Bill Cut
WASHINGTON (UPI) — The
House Thursday night approved
a record rash cut of one billion
100 million dollars in President
Kennedy’s foreign aid request. In
doing so, i) ignored a Presidential
warning that such a sharp cut
might hurt the security of the
free world A roll call vote of
240 to 144 passed the bill with the
cut intact. Also contained in the
measure was a surprise proposal
to cut off all U.S. aid to any coun
try trading with Communist Cuba
The house version of the bill now
goes to the senate where a sharp
debate over the record cut is cer
tain.
Cup Race Postponed
NEWPORT, It I. (UPI) — The
Australian yacht “Gretel” has re
quested and received a postpone
ment for the fourth heat of the
America’s Cup races. The craft
crossed the finish line nearly nine
minutes behind the American
vessel "Weatherly” Thursday.

Stevenson Warns U.N.
UNITED NATIONS (UPD
OS. Ambassador Adlai Stevenson
spoke out at the U.N. Thursday
warning that Communist pressure
on Beilin is a "threat to world
peace.” Stevenson also urged the
General Assembly to put the U.N
on a sound financial basis. He
plugged for the unconditional
election of a Secretary General to
a five-year term with “full free
dom and authority.”
Strike Meet Held
WASHINGTON, I) C. (UPI)—
Acting Gabor Secretary Willard
Wirtz met with labor and manage
ment officials in Washington yes
terday in efforts to settle the Chi
cago and North Western railway
strike. He called the Thursday
night meeting to “tie up loose
ends” over the three-week-old dis
pute between the Railroad and
the Telegraphers Union. Wirtz
is trying to get the rival factions
to agree on specific questions to
be submitted to an arbitration
board.
Estes' Friends Jailed
EL PASO, Tex. (UPI) — Three
former associates of financier Bil
lie Sol Estes were given sentences
at El Paso, Tex. Thursday. Fed
eral Judge R. E Thomsan sen
tenced two Superior Manufactur
ing Co officials to 10-year prison
terms and the third to six years
imprisonment. Thomsan accused
them of what he called "One of
the most premeditated, fantastic
and ruthless frauds" in the south
west’s history.

of director of off-campus housing.
The job will be bandied by H.
P. Barnhart, director of dormitor
ies, and he will also direct the
housing program for students
seeking apartments and rooms,
and married student housing proj
ects.
A former Lane County sanita
tion department employee, John
D. Thorpe, has been hired by the
University to work for the dormi
tory office. Thorpe will assume
most of the duties involved in
married student housing projects
and plans, off campus problems in
housing and information on off
campus housing.
