Model UN Conference
Opens Here Thursday
Approximately 500 Oregon
high school students, all mem
bers of the International Rela
tions Leagues at their schools,
will participate in a Model Uni
ted Nations conference at the
University. Feb. 22-2-4.
The MUN session is the 15th
annual conference sponsored by
the University’s Institute of In
ternational Studies and Overseas
Administration and the Interna
tional Relations Committee of
the Oregon Education Associa
tion.

Music Recital
Set Thursday
Lawrence Maves anti William
Woods will present three works
for violin and piano in a reci
til Thursday at 8 p.m, in the
School of Music auditorium.
Both art' members of the Univer
sity School of Music faculty.
The recital is part of the cur
rent Festival of Arts at the Uni
versity. It is open to the public.
Mavt s and Woods are members
of the University Trio, an ensem
ble that has been heard in con
certs throughout the Northwest.
Maves is an instructor in vio
lin. and Woods is an assistant
professor of piano.
The recital will include Mo

An artist’s conception of Project Gnome, a step toward providing power and isotopes from under
ground thermonuclear detonations. This area of endeavor is part of Project Plowshare, initiated at
the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory of the University of California. Other Plowshare projects under
study include the excavation of an experimental harbor in Alaska, production of oil from tar sands,
control of groundwaters, mining applications, and other novel ideas using the energy of nuclear
explosives.
