Ducks set season finale with OSU
By JOE UEKUEIt

The Oregon Ducks were busy
Monduy night, priming them
selves for their biggest foot
ball attraction of the year, the
Homecoming clash with (he Ore
gon Htato Beavers Saturday aft
ernoon on Hayward field.
Oregon came out of lust
week's Ohio State game in good j
shape physically and should be I
In full force for this 05th an- i
mini "Civil War" scrap.
HALFBACK Mike Gaechter I
twisted an ankle in the last half;
of Saturday's game and has j
been listed as the only doubt- j
ful participant In the upcoming!
battle.
Tackle Hon Sniriow and guart j
Bill Del Biaggio were banged up;
a bit but both have- been cleared J
for action.
The Beavers are in good shape
Injury-wise, with only end Kklpi
Bussell and third-string quarter- j
back Kich Brooks on the side- j
lines.
< OA< If TOM.MV I’KOTHKO
Is expected to send bis crew Into
action with the same starting
lineup that he has used all sea
son.
Broken wrist puts
Madsen on bench
Bruce .Madsen, sophomore
guard on this year's Oregon
basketball team, suffered a
broken wrist last weekend
while practicing with the team.
Madsen played for the Frosh
hist year and was an All-Stat
er from Montana in high school.
He will be out of action for at
least six weeks.

Terry linker, the "boy won
!er" will get the nod at quar
terback. but Bill Sullivan, a
junior from Crescent City, Calif.,
will be ready to give Baker any
mpport he might need Sullivan
ilaycl approximately 10 minutes
>n last Saturday’s contest with
irigham Young and according to
his coaches did a surprisingly
fine job.
A J*AJK of real speedsters,
senior Hank Rivera and sopho
more Leroy Whittle will handle
most of OSU's running chores
■'-om the halfback spots. Bruce
Williams, a 200-pounder, will go
at fullback.
The Oregon lineup should run
about the same as it has the past
three weeks, with the possible ex
ception of Gaechter. Lu Bain will
probably be called upon to fill
Tae-.-hter's right halfback spot
f the senior scatback isn't ready
to go by then.
The "war”, while of great im
portance to state of Oregon fans,
will mean little as far as the na
tionwide picture goes. The Ducks
have a four-win, five-loss season
••ecord and Oregon State has done
pnlv a little better with four
and four.
THUS, THE nir of excitement
often times generated by the pos- '
Ability of a bowl bid hanging on
the outcome will be absent from
' his 'year’s tussle.
Nevertheless, there will be ac
tion aplenty. There always is
when these two arch-rivals meet.
For the first time in three
years, Mel Renfro and Terry Bak
er will be thrown into action on
the same football field, and for
the first time they will be sup
porting opposing forces.
RENFRO, OREGON’S flashy
sophomore halfback, and Baker,
OSU's self-appraised demon of
the gridiron, were teammates at
Portland's Jefferson high school
during some of that school's
greatest football years.
If these two don't produce the
fireworks, the game could very
well end in the first 0-0 tie be
tween these two schools since
1931.
No reports are in as yet, but
national odds-makers are expect
ed to rate the game nearly a toss
up.
THE RECORDS are almost
identical and we find little rea
son to sway our opinion one way
or the other by comparing re
sults against common opponents, j
Oregon beat Stanford, 19-7,
while the Indians downed OSU,

'14-0. But on the other side of
he ledger, Oregon dropped a one
ooint decision to the same Wash
ington State team which the Bea
vers had conquered the week be
fore by seven.
Both teams have beaten Ida
I ho and Washington.
This will, of course, be the
final game of the year for the
| Ducks, but Oregon State will have
| one game remaining against Hou
ston the following week in Hou
' ston.
