Tartuffe...
IC onliiiurd from [wtjf r>)
Performances by some of t h <
other actors displayed this same
sort of unevenness. They would b<
quite good in one scene, and jusi
barely adequate in another.
It is to Wismer's credit thal
the play didn't lag: one quicklj
went from uninteresting, un
inspiring scene to an exciting
comic one.
MICHAEL HALPERN was out
standing as the deluded Orgon
His performance saved scene aft
er scene and kept up audience
interest. One should sec the pla>
if only to see him he was trulj
the spark for the rest of the cast
Wendy Firman as Orgon's wife
and Bill Hall as his son, were
also quite good. Barry Swennum
son, as the hypocrite, was effec
tively, "pious."
Technically, the play was quite
good. The opening entrance oi
Louis XVI (majestically playee
by Robert Eggers) and his com
bers was very effective, as wa;
the opening music (which tended
however, to drown out some oi
the beginning speech.
The setting added to the storj
and didn’t distract from th<
play’s actions. And the costumes
were magnificent; they adder
much color to the production anc
helped to make the play com*
alive.
“Tartuffe", then, offers appea
to both fans of comedy and seri
ous drama. A theater goer Whc
desires an evening of interestin':
entertainment would be sure tc
enjoy the play.
