nominated for All-American
The nation’s college grid coa
ches have named 22 new players
■—four of them from the West
Coast—to the roster of candidates
for the 1960 All-American foot
ball team.
Selections were made in a sec
ond balloting by the American
Football Coaches Association,
and were based on the players’
performances during the first
seven games of the season.
MARLIN and Mike McKeever,
the two big twin brothers from
the University of Southern Cal
ifornia, have both been nomin
ated for the All-American team.
The twins, Mike who plays
guard, and Marlin who plays end, j
were both nominated last year, j
and they again have proved wor
thy of the honor.
Mike recently underwent brain ,
surgery for a blood clot he re-'
ceived in the USC-Stanford game, j
OREGON State’s big tackle,'
Mike Kline, has also been hon
ored in the second balloting. Kline
is a defensive star for the Beav
ers and is one of the few OSC
starters who has not received an
injury this season. He has a fine
defensive record thus far in the
season, but should not be under
rated in his offensive ability.
Keith Lincoln, Washington
State halfback, is also on the list
of new candidates. Lincoln, one
of the best rushers and pass re
ceivers on the coast, was hurt
recently, but should return to
action soon.
Also worth mentioning is Tom
Larscheid from Utah State. He
is second in the nation in rush
ing with nearly 10 yards per
carry. Larscheid is probably the
best halfback Utah State has
seen in some years.
TWO OTHER outstanding
players who are notably absent
from the nominations are Dave
Urell and OSC’s Terry Baker.
Urell, whose tremendous offen
sive and defensive play has
greatly aided the University of
Beavers to face
Indians Saturday
Oregon State’s Beavers, next
week’s opponent for Oregon’s
Webfoots in the annual civil war
grid battle, sharpened up on their
pass defense yesterday and Wed
nesday in preparation for bat
tle tomorrow with Stanford’s In
dians in Palo Alto.
THE BEAVERS of Tommy
Prothro, one of the surprises in
the northwest grid wars this
season, currently hold a 4-3 sea
son^ record-against some of the
best opposition in the land.
The most recent Beaver vic
tory came last Saturday when
they stormed back from behind
at Pullman, Washington to over
come a 10-0 first quarter Cougar J
lead to win, 20-10.
W ith an explosive backfield I
featuring Don Kasso, Terry Ba
ker, Grimm Mason, and Hank
Rivera (to mention only a few)
it is little wonder that oppon
ents have not counted the Beav
ers out of any ball games this
year.
IOWA’S HAWKEYES found
this out in the second game of
the season when they piled up
an early first quarter lead, only
to have the Beavers storm back
into contention in the second
half.
Lack of depth has been the
big Corvallis worry this sea
son, especially in this second half
of the campaign.
WASHINGTON’S Huskies de
monstrated this three weeks ago
at Multnomah Stadium when they
wore away a 22-7 Beaver lead
with superior man power to gain
a 30-29 win.
But spirit and guts count more
than manpower in these intra
state grid battles, and even if
the Beavers should lose t<? Stan
ford tomorrow in Palo Alto, it
will have very little bearing on
their attitude when they face our
Ducks in eight days on their
home turf.

Emerald pigskin pickers
try again on tough slate
After a so-so week last Saturday In which Steve Millikin Increased
his lead, The Kmerald pigskin derby continues with ten or more
tough games.
With only two more weeks to go in the derby, (In* pressure is
beginning to tell on the contenders, and some muy fall by the way.
side unless Millikin has a bad day.
If ground is to be gained, it must be gained this week, ns next
week finds a tough group of traditional* through which the prog

Why not match your skill with that of The Kmerald staff, put
ting your choices in the margin and matching them up after Satur
