Prof, discusses
sex modification
Controlled determination of hcx
In animal breeding and human re
production has left the realm of
speculation and become a "fasci
nating" project for laboratory in
vestigation, according to Kmil
Wltachl, profeaeor of zoology, em
bryology, and endocrinology at
the State University of Iowa,
who spoke here Tuesday.
WIHC'Hl, a Sigma XI national
lecturer, discussed "Sex Reversal
in Animals nnd In Man" at the
Unlveralty chapter. Me noted that
because sporadic hcx reversal In
the courae of human development
does exist, Its aoclologlc and sci
entific aspects deserve critical
evaluation.
Wlachl noted that animal ex
periments provide means for
analysis of genetic and epigenetic
determinants of normal sex de
velopment ami of naturally occur
ring or deliberate modification.
KPH1KNKSI.H IS the theory
that development starts from a
structureless cell and consists in
the successive formation and ad
dition of new parts that do not
pre-exist in the fertilized egg.
Wlachl discussed two classes of
epigenetic factors.
One class, he said, consists of
reactions issuing from the chro
mosomal genes, which direct em
bryonic differentiation by way of
inductor systems. A second af
fords the possibility of altering
the course of development by
either supporting or opposing
certain elements of the sequences
normally established in the first
class. ,
Hormones and other chemical
effectors, temperature and spe
cific metabolic conditions arc
some of the tools that have served
In the experimental manipulation
of sex differentiation, Wise hi

Rutherford said that the rep
resentation is "inadequate in
; Home areas." He added that this
was only the second year of the
I change in Senate representation
and advocated that we should
wait and see how it works out in
the next year before making any
changes.
Grebe then presented the three j
with a third question, "How can j
we get more student opinion on :
the ASUO Senate?"
Bauge answered by suggesting
I a reactivation of the current
ASUO Cabinet. "It should be an
: advisory group to the president
| and as such I would like to see
| the group meet regularly and
; also attend Senate meetings regu
1 larly," Bauge said.
BAUGE ALSO said that he
would add the Honors College j
I chairman and the Greater Oregon
chairman to this seven-member
i Cabinet, thus increasing its mem
, bership to nine. He said, "This
. change would increase the scope
of efffectiveness of the group a
| great deal."
Rutherford also proposed ad
ditions to the present Cabinet
membership. He said, "I would
add the Greater Oregon chairman,
i l EC president, Pan-hellenic presi
dent. and Inter-Hall president to
the Cabinet."
Schell advocated a reorganiza
tion of the Cabinet. "It is not a
functioning group now but it was
at the first of the year."
Schell said that there were
three prinicpal factions on cam
pus. The three are faculty, ad
ministration, and students. He
remarked that of the three, the
students are the least organized.
Schell's extensive plan for the
Cabinet was elaborated in his
platform which appeared in Mon
day's Emerald.
