    Webfoots face Washington football'jinx'
By LA llllY KtJRTZ
Emerald Sport* Editor
Oregon will run into more than
n tough football team Saturday
in Multnomah Stadium.
They’ll be running once more
into the Washington "Jinx,” which
has seen the Ducks win only one
game in the past ton years from
the Huskies.
A Washington fan could state
with accuracy that the Seattleites
can beat the Ducks 90 per cent of
the time. Oregon, however, stands
a good chance of breaking the
hex, If the Webfoots can play as
well as they did against Air
Force.
Injuries probably won't be a
big factor in the contest, al
though Duck tackle John Wil
cox and fUley Mattson don’t
appear to be In top shape after
Injuries Saturday and Wash
ington halfback Carver Day
ton has been declared out for
the season with a bad knee.
Other than that, both squads
are in good condition for what
amounts to th$ "big one” for the
Ducks, who will most certainly
advance into high national promi
nece If they stop the Huskies.
A Duck victory would give
coach Len Casanova hla second
win over Washington in the time
he’s coached at Eugene. He’s loat
to the Huskies seven timea.
In 1951. when Caa first took
over with a group of green fresh
men and sophomores, the Huskies
roiled up a 63-6 margin In Port
land and followed it up the next
season with a 49-0 victory.
Washington won again in 1953,
14-6, and then the Ducks, led by
George 8haw, smashed the Hus
kies in Seattle by a 26-7 count.
Washington came back, how
ever, and has won the last four
games by margins of 19-7, 29-7,
13-6 and 6^0, the latter two
coming over W'ebfoot squads
which definitely rated the fa
vorite’s tag.
This year, the game will most
likely be rated a tossup, although
Oregon's 5-0 record may sway
the odds-makers to pick the
Ducks. The Ducks are rated 11th
nationally and Washington 20th.
It must be remembered, how
ever. that Washington has lost
only to the nation's fifth-ranking
team. USC, and that in a tight
struggle. 22-15.
The Huskies boast three back
field men who average nearly six
yards per carry between them,
and that doesn’t offer too much
encouragement for the Ducks,
Ex-Duck Phelps
leads AFB win
Former University of Oregon
halfback Leroy Phelps switched
to quarterback Saturday, and
threw five touchdown passes in
leading his Bolling Air Force
Base (D.C.) team to a 78-8 win
over Fort Gordon.
Phelps shared honors with al
ternate signal-caller Eddie West,
who also passed for five touch
downs as the Bolling squad broke
a team record for points scored
in a single game.
The previous record of 60 was
set In 1954 when such outstand
ing gridders as Tommy O’Connell,
Dan Shannon, Billy Reynolds, and
Menil Mavraides were playing for
the squad.
Phelps' scoring tosses went for
21, 3, 1, 8, and 9 yards respec
tively as Bolling completely over
whelmed their opponents, hold
ing a 28-0 lead at the end of the
first quarter, and scoring 28 more
in the final period.
Phelps played for the Ducks in
1956 at halfback, and had a brief
tryout with the San Francisco
49ers before being released.
JIM OWENS
Head football coach. University of Washington
who have Hurrendered quite a bit
of yardage to the opposition, al
though getting a bit better de
fensively with each effort.
Ray Ja'-kson. Joe -lone*, and
Don McKata have run for 202,
170 and 147 yard, respectively,
for average gains of 5J1, 7.1
and 5.9.
Quarterback Bob Schloredt has
not done a bad Job passing,
either, throwing 34 times and
completing 18 for a 53 per cent
average and 308 total yards.
George Fleming, the do-every
thing halfback, has scored three
touchdowns and kicked three
field goals in three attempts as
well as eight extra points for a!
total of 35 tallies, which makes
him the top scorer on both teams.
Oregon's twin fullback threats.
Dave Powell and Harry Needham,
have each racked up four touch
downs; and flashy Willie West
has accounted for three.
Oregon, overall, has aver
aged 23 points per game while
holding the opposition to 10.
: Washington has done better
1 both offensively and defensive

Washington coach Jim Owens
will likely start an all-junior line
up against the Ducks, and al
ternate with a capable second
unit that has seen almost as much
action as the first.
When the second squad is in,
sophomore Jim Everett replaces
8chloredt at quarterback, and
halfbacks Don Millich and Sam
Hurworth come in along with
Jones, who combines with Jack
son to give the Huskies almost
as potent a fullback duo as Ore
gon.
McKeta has been the bread
and-butter man with the ball so
far, carrying 10 more times than
Jackson over the first half of
the season.
Washington has been very
adept at picking off the oppo
sition’s passes, snagging 13
aerials and seeing only four of
their own intercepted.
Schloredt and Fleming have
nabbed six between them, and the
former returned one for a touch
down against Utah in the Hus
kies’ 51-6 victory.
Washington ia essentially a
bail-control team that makes few
mistakes and doesn’t give the
opposition much of a chance to
get its own offense rolling.
It’ll take a top-notch effort by
Oregon to whip the Huskies, but
this could be the year.
At least the Ducks are off to
a good start.
