Power led bold,
romantic life
By BOB THOMAS
A I* Motion Picture Writer
HOLLYWOOD <*l — Tyrone
Power, the ideal lover on the
screen, led nn equally romantic
career in real life.
Ilia Rood looks. Ids gracious
manner and worldllness swayed
the hearts of some'of Holly -
wood'K moat famous beauties.
Yet hla last love was a com
plete unknown to the movie
world.
Tyrone's first Hollywood love
was Sonja Hetiie. the sparkling
cyed skater from Norway and his
co-star in “Thin Ice.’ Friends ex
pected them to marry.
Never too old
But Sonja went to Norway and
Ty began dating Janet Gaynor.
They almost reached an engage
ment too, but broke off And he
began escorting Arlcen Whelan.
His propensity for dating his co
stars was borne out with Norma
Shearer “Marie Antoinette," Lor
retta Young “Love is News" And
Annabeila “Suez.”
Often his romances were with
actresses older than himself,
as was the case with Aniutlieliu.
She was divorced and had a 9
year-old daughter. Desperately
In love, Tyrone and Annabeila
inarrhs! when Power was M.
"Married to her,” Tyrone de
clared after a year, “riches never
cease.”
Annabeila found him a differ
ent man when he returned from
the war. "Freedom’s the greatest
thing in the world to me," he said,
and their marriage ended after
seven years and no children.
Ty Torrid
"Ty Power’s the only man I've
ever loved." This bold statement
came from Lana Turner as she
and Ty engaged in a torrid ro
mance between marriages. She
proved her point by vanishing
from the set of "Green Dolphin
Street” And turning up in the
heart of Mexico where he was
filming "Captain from Castllh-"
They might have married, ex
cept that Ty was not yet free
from Annubella. A* wuh often
the case with Lana. the romance
cooled anil they went separate
ways.
l.lndu Christian had known
Ty slightly in Hollywood. So
when the ambition* lieauty
from Mexico discovered he was
staying in the same hotel In
ltoine, she telephoned him. They
met for cocktail*, and unother
tumultuous romance In-Kan.
They married shortly there
after.
They had two daughters and
a fast life in various capitals of
the world. Hollywood whispered
that while Ty was working abroad
she was being escorted by a young
Britisher. Kdmund Purdom. The
end finally came w-hen she testi
fied in tears that Ty liked to
take trips but not with her. Her
attorney estimated the settlement
at.over a million dollars.
(.iris, girls, girls
Ty continued his travels and
gloried in the single life. Last
year In Mexico City he told me:
"I'm very happy the way I am
now. I know several girls here
and there who are excellent com
pany and who have no thoughts
of matrimony. Those who do are
quickly discovered and elimi
nated."
Vet he again married, this
time to u non-professional. Mis
sissippi in-lie Ib-hhle Smith
Mlnardos. I.a*i June, they an
nounced happily that they were
expecting a child in February.
She had a daughter of her own
by a previous marriage, and
they were hoping tor a son.
