    Theta Sigs honor Journalism women
Pat Treece and Mary Jo Stew
art, both journalism pre-majors,
were recently honored as the out
standing sophomore and fresh
man women in journalism by
Theta Sigma Phi, national pro
fessional honorary for women in
journalism.
The awards were presented at
last week's Matrix Table, spon
sored annually by the honorary.
Featured at the banquet was
the tapping of new Theta Sig
members. They are Barbara Step
per, Joann Shore, Kathy Cook.
Judy Anderson, Miss Treece,
Gail Mottler and Barbara Per
ron.
Mrs. Thomas Wright, former
editor of the Emerald and a Uni
versity graduate, was honored as
the 1958 Woman of Achievement
for her civic and newspaper ac

Featured speaker was Helmut
Meyer-Dietrich, editor of the
Berliner Morgenpost, who was
completing a series of campus
speaking engagements.
Ann Connell of the Register
Glia id was also tapped for mem
bership in the honorary, which
includes both campus and career
women in its membership.
Presiding at the banquet was
Cornelia Fogle, senior in journa
lism, and president of the cam
pus group.
Gallery exhibits
Mikami paintings
A Japanese brush painting- ex
hibit by Takahiko Mikami will be
held in the Student Union art
gallery, May 3 to 18.
Since 1953 Mr. Mikami has
been executive director of the
International Education Center,
Tokyo. Much of his energy’ has
gone into the establishment and
| financing of the Center and an
American Academy of Japanese
Fine Arts in the United States.
Mr. Mikami has exhibited at
the Metropolitan Museum in
Tokyo, the Tokyo-do Gallery, the
Labor Department Exhibition,
where he won the Japanese Gov
ernment Labor Office's prize, the
Zokeibunka Exhibition winning
the governor's prize in Japan,
and a one-man show at Carne
gie Endowment International
Center in New York City.
He is Chairman of the Art
Society of Meiji Univeisity, and
has taught oil and Japanese
painting at the International
Education Center in Tokyo. Mi
kami is presently giving instruc
tional television programs of
Japanese brush painting on
more than 26 educational T.V.
stations all over the U.S. He has
established and is the director of
the Japanese Art Center in San
Francisco. His studio is in San
Francisco, California.
