OSC was in the running in
Friday’s match until the end of
the best-lmll matches; then the
roof fell In. Oregon came out
on top in best-ball play, 5-2,
with the Duck duo of Boh Nor

first in their 1958 defense of the

advantage, then won the laurels
when Larry Ottis and Marv
Woods beat the Bearcats’ Bob
Bennett and Dale Daniel, 6-1,
7-5, In doubles play.
In singles play, Oregon's Ottis,
Woods, and Phil Lowthiah turn
ed In victories. The two teams ex
changed doubles triumphs.
Duckling Linksmen
Qualify for Action
Tom Jakobsen and Chuck
Hunter led the Oregon Duckling
golf squad with a 288 and 293
respectively for 72 holes as quali
fying rounds for Bob Gorman’s
linksmen ended Friday at the
Eugene Country Club.
Other qualifiers and their

battling for a starting lineup
berth at third base, while Don
Lane and Jim Rice are the two
prospects for first base.
Ron Whittaker, scheduled to
hurl the opening day clash, joins
Rollie Heath, Lane and Jim Fitz
simmons as the chief starters on
this year’s ball club. All are let
termen except Fitzsimmons who
is an Olympic JC transfer.
The Ducks, winners of the
division title last year, may
find the competition stiffer this
season with improved clubs at
09C and Washington State.
Both clubs ar<* stacked heavily
with pitching.
Winners of eight of 10 pre
conference games, Oregon’s win
list includes a spring-trip victory
over California winners of the
National Collegiate baseball title
