EMERALP REVIEWS Sinatra Gives Sparkle To 'Pal Joey' Musical BY' JOHN LENGEL Emerald Entertainment Editor Frank Sinatra is one of the hottest items around Filmville today. Producers realize that casting Sinatra in any type of movie spells good box office. However, everybody concerned with Columbia's "Pal Joey" gets together to give its audience the old "run for their money." The formula of a subtle and witty script adapted from the Broadway musical, plus the mu sic of Rodgers and Hart, plus the heads up acting of Sinatra and Rita Hayworth, minus the efforts of Kim Novak, provides viewers with an entertaining evening. Sinatra takes the lead as Joey Evans, a transient singer and master of ceremonies with a low slate of morals. His song style and stage presence add a good healthy punch to the production. Big Time Detour In "Joey” Sinatra trys to make the big time by moving a small-time dive in San Fran cisco's International Settlement into a swank night club sur roundings atop the city’s posh Kiddies leuna ifou 4.0429 Runs Dec. 6-8 ‘The Big Land’ In “Technicolor” with ALAN LADD and VIRGINIA MAYO ‘THE GARMENT JUNGLE’ with LEE JACOB Nob Hill. Joey almost makes it by “using” widowed socialite Rita Hayworth. However Miss Hayworth is nobody's fool, in the script at least, and calls the whole show off at the last moment after seeing through some extracur ricular activity between pal Joey, and chorus line anchor, Kim Novak. We've seen the ending some place before. A guy plus a girl with nothing but love—sup posedly, is a very trite, shop worn ending to an otherwise creditable effort. Hayworth l’p Rita Hayworth as the middle ! aged socialite-widow comes j through with an unexpected pol j ished performance. It's nice to see Hayworth out of the stereo typed, pedestrian roles that dot her casting record. Saint Better Kim Novak slinks through her part as chorus bumper with the presence and grace of a horse. In a vocal, "My Funny Valen | tine,” Novak glassily stares through a hollowed stage prop. ' murdering the lyrics with no 1 quarter granted. This was a mis j cast. The role could have been handled much better by screen favorite Eva Marie Saint. The film is shot for the most part in San Francisco. Techni color and imagination on the part of the camerman capture the city's charm. His use of in teresting camera angles com bined with some pleasant light ing effects, give the film an added gloss that many recent films lack. — Campus Calendar Friday 7:30 IRC Registration Lobby 2nd Fir SU Noon IRC Lnch 110 SU Ger Tbl 114 SU Rally Bd 334 SU 3 p.m. AWS Christmas Tea Col Com 333 SU 4 p.m. Fri at 4 Fishbowl SU 6:30 IRC Bnqt 110 SU 7:30 Koffee Klatch Dadsrm SU 8 p.m. Cosmo Cong Church Attention from order your Xmas photo now Moderne Studio i Note Final Schedule 12- 6-57 Cherney Make-Up 12- 6-57 French Make-Up 12- 6-57 Men’s Make-Up 12- 9-57 Sheldon 12- 9-57 Men’s Make-Up 12-10-57 Off Campus 12-11-57 Off Campus 12-12-57 Off Campus 12-13-57 General Make-Up 12-14-57 General Make-Up 9:00-11:25 12:30-3:00 3:00-5:25 9:00-11:25 12:30-3:30 3 :30-5 :25 9 :00-5 :25 9:00-5:25 9:00-5:25 9:00-5:25 9:00-12:00 NOTE: Barber shops closed on Mondays Men should have hair cut Saturday for Monday portraits.
