Veep Nixon's Arrival
Sees Busy Reception
By BILL COOK
Emerald Staff Writer
From the moment the flagship
"Little Rock’i touched its wheels
at Eugene airport Wednesday aft
ernoon bearing Richard M. Nixon,
a whirl of well organized activity
Bui rounded the vice-president.
State and local Republican lead
ers headed by Douglas McKay
were lined up expectantly to meet
the smiling Nixon as he deplaned
with his wife, Pat. With him were
newsmen and photographers who
quickly shot the necessary pic
tures of Nixon and McKay shak
ing hands on the airport ramp.
The crowd was small and
varied, ranging from small chil
dren waving banners to party
workers to everyday folk excited
by the glamous of seeing an im
portant leader so close at hand.
Outstanding among the last was
an older lady who clutched a let
ter from Nixon and said as he
shook her hand, “I received your
letter. Thank you so much. Good
luck and God bless you.” In the
background were the ever-pres
ent Secret Service men trying so
hard to be inconspicuous that they
were obvious.
Holds Press Conference
When the hand-shaking was
over, the vice-president was ush
ered into a press conference with
the Secret Service clearing the
way. This reporter discovered
their efficiency when upon nearly
colliding with Mrs. Nixon, he was

snatched out of the way by a very
husky agent.
Nixon left the short press con
ference soon after and was
hustled into a motorcade which
headed for the Eugene hotel. At
the hotel Nixon “dropped in” on
; a precinct meeting in progress,
then moved on to a veterans meet
ing and a reception. He then re
; tired to his room to rest for his
speech at McArthur court.
Hall Decorated
The basketball pavilion was
! transformed into a junior con
vention hall for the speech with
; posters, signs, elephant heads,
1 and placards for the audience to
wave. The halls and aisles were
: swarming with Eugene police,
members of the Sheriff’s posse—
wearing their guns for the big
i event- and of course the Secret
Service, still looking "inconspicu
ous." Two of them were sighted
; inspecting the area under the
speakers platform.
The evening’s excitement got
; underway with the entrance of a
I color guard marching to music
reminiscent of the late lamented
three ring circus. The ceremony
became a complete fiasco when
the Oregon flag refused to stand.
And of course Dandy, the ATO
mascot, was there.
Platform activities began with
| the introduction of state and lo
cal candidates from coroner to
! U.S. Senator—the candidate for
j secretary of state was con
I cpicuously absent — and short
speeches.
Nixon Enters
At last it was time for Nixon
to arrive. Right on schedule, at
7:55. he entered the packed audi
torium. He was introduced by
Harris Ellsworth and promptly at
8 p.m. Nixon began to speak.
He spoke in a vigorous style
somewhat like a first affirmative
speaker in a debate, due perhaps
to his debating experience and the
fact that he was supporting the
j party in power.
A note of campus interest was
supplied when Skull and Dagger,
sophomore men’s honorary, tap
ped Nixon as he left the audi
torium. Nixon thanked Walt
Schreck. president, for the in
signia of the honorary and said
he would “wear it at my next
speech, but not at Oregon State.”
