Increasing; the predicted games to ten. a favorable \\ orld
Series result (for three of us) and a mistake combined to
boost the Emerald experts’ averages last weekend, but
fired up Utah. Stanford and Otterbeiu teams kept better
scores just out of grasp.
The addition of enough games to make an even ten
brought the overall accumulative average up from a glitter
ing .381 to a brilliant .519. “Swami" Wilson led the parade
to higher figures with a sky-scraping .588, including a
perfect pick of the series and a sheer-luck guess on the
Otterbein-Oberlin mystery game.
Onlv a non-conference choice of Oregon over \\ ashing
ton and the standard pick of Missouri over l tah kept \\ il
son from a perfect weekend.
Utah Thwarts Experts
The Utah upset threw the entire staff, which gave Mis
souri a unanimous vote. ‘Tearless holly Claussen s mys
terv game saw Otterbein's Cardinals, sparked by a new
coach, drop Oberlin’s Yeomen, 19-14. to the displeasure of
Oberlin’s 27-year veteran coach and five of the experts.
This week Editor Rice pulled Brandeis versus Bates
out of a battered rooter's lid. and the predictors are ofF
and running again. The “Judges" of Brandeis will be re
membered for yielding 469 yards to Boston college in
their first season tilt, giving the Eagles national superior
ity in the single game offense race.
Ex-sports editor Bob Robinson, who has acquired no
knickname as vet, is already out searching the schedules
to get his alliterative confuser for next week.
Mistake Costs Upset Pick
Robbie also claims to be the upset expert, although a
check of last week's predictions won’t prove it. He put
Stanford six points better than Ohio State, but in copying
the picks, we reversed it. and he missed his moment of glory.
The Stanford surprise caught many unaware, but only
two of the experts stuck with Cheerful Chuck Taylor and
the Indians in their second venture into Big Ten com
petition this week.
As for real upset opportunities, no one stuck his neck
out far enough to rate Oregon State above UCLA. As
Bruin publicity director Vic Kelley points out. the Beavers
are one of the very few unbeaten and unscored upon teams
in the nation, and could end up, amazingly enough, in the
Rose Bowl if they could dispatch Ronnie Knox and friends
and win remaining games with all Northwest clubs and Cal.
Tossups Seen
But on to the so-called “standard" picks, which include
some head-scratchers this time. If Michigan against Armv
at Ann Arbor isn’t enough to scare the prognosticators,
Notre Dame versus Miami of Florida ought to come close.
The Wolverines are out to get their first victory over
the Don Hollender-led Cadets after five fruitless efforts.
At Coral Gables it will be the Hurricanes, who took care
of eight opponents last year with the ease of their femin
ine namesakes, trying Terry Brennan’s Fighting Irish.
And as a topper we have unbeaten Washington against
unbeaten Southern California right here in the Northwest.
Off to the Races „
But “Swami” Wilson gives the P.F.. department towel an
extra turn around his head and leads the Emerald gussing
staff into its third week:

Lane Shifts
To Cardinals
ST. LOUIS Wt Frank Lane,
who recently resigned a similar
job with the Chicago White Sox.
was given a three-year contract
Thursday as general manager of
the St. Louis Cardinals.
At the same time, August A.
Busch, president of the Cardinals,
announced that Dick Meyer, the
' retiring general manager and a
top executive of the Anheuser
Busch brewer headed by Busch,
has been named executive vice
president of the Cardinals. Busch
said that Lane would be given
“full authority as general man
ager" and would have full re
sponsibility for carrying out Car
dinal policies.
Busch said he and his asso
ciates had talked with the r>9
year-old Lane at great length
! and "as a result I can say we
have as fine an understanding
of each other as is possible for
men who talk openly and frank
ly with all of their curds on the
table."
Anticipating that newsmen
would ask whether Lane would
be given full authority, Busch
said he would try to answer the
question by saying "the answer
is a simple Yes."
Meyer told him some time ago,
Busch said, that the time re
quired by his duties as a brew
ery executive left him too little
time to devote to his Cardinul
duties.
Meyer suggested then that the
Cardinal front office and minor
league system be reorganized and
that "the best man available any
in the country” be hired as gen
eral manager for the club.
Busch said he and his asso
ciates looked carefully but were
unable to find a man so qualified
until Lane became available
through his resignation from the
Chicago club.
"Here, we felt, was a man who
did meet our standards " Busch
3aid.
