    Mother's Club Organized in 1928

born, that of organizing a Moth
ers club.
In the fall of inns the Mother's
club flrHt began and ban been
expanding ever Mince. The first
Mother’s Day whh held In the
spring of 1928, and the annual
affair haH since been combined
with Junior Weekend.
A new president, Arnold Ben
nett, had come to the University
that year from the University
of Wisconsin faculty. Wisconsin
had parents' organizations, and
President Bennett knew what
they could do for a University.
Branches In Other States
The organization of the Uni
versity of Oregon Mothers is not
confined to this state alone. It
has active branches in California
and in other areas throughout
the Northwest.
The club is organized into dis
tricts and governed through 10
district vice-presidents. The busi
ness of the club is conducted
through an executive board
which meets several times during
the winter months.
Members of the executive board
include the president, vlce-presi
dent, secretary, treasurer, finan
cial secretary, corresponding
secretary, and retiring president.

Mother’s club this year is Mrs.
Dean Micklewait of Eugene.
Other officers are: vice-presi
dent, Mrs. Walt Walton of Sa
lem; secretary, Mrs. Darwin Spi
cer of Eugene; treasurer, Mrs.
Melvin Gustafson of Eugene; fi
nancial secretary, Mrs. L. E. Zin
Iker of Creswell; and correspond
ing secretary, Mrs. S. Douglas
Wright of Portland.
Meeting This Morning
Every year during Junior
Weekend the executive board,
district vice-presidents and ac
tive members meet to conduct a
short business meeting and elect
new officers. The 1958 meeting
will be held after the breakfast
this morning.

dent Union Ballroom. President

The Mother'a Club baa many
activities and projects. The prin
cipal activity ia raising money
for scholarships. They award
three $300 scholarships every
year plus several amounting to
$200 and $165.
Money From Several Sources
The clubs raise money for
scholarships is various ways, one
of which is the $1 yearly dues.
Activities such as bridge parties
and rummage sales account for
the rest of the money.
The mothers have established
an emergency loan fund, admin
istered through University offi
cials and available to all stu
dents in need of immediate funds.
There is no interest charged on
this fund, but there is a small
service charge for administra
tion.
One of the most important
things they do is to keep in con
stant touch with the University,
answering questions in their
communities and acting as stab
ilizers of public opinion.
