    Local Movies Offer Feast'
By Bob Ross
Emerald Reporter
Eugene theatres are offering
a feast this weekend for the de
vourer of mediocre movies.
Heading the menu is the his
toric brawl, “Destry," a lusty,
lurid, lawless legend of the West,
whichc is playing at the Heilig
Friday and Saturday. Inspired
by Max Brand’s famous novel,
this picture offers one of the
screen's most historic hair-pull
ing, scratch and claw brawls be
tween two women.
It has everything: a colorful
and extraordinary saloon-girl, a
murderous ruler of a vast em
pire, a town drunk, a corrupt

In addition two sparkling
songs are being introduced.!
"Bang! Bang!" and “If You Can
Can-Can." Audie Murphy and
Thomas Mitchell help make this
picture full of electric excite- -
ment.
Double Bill Back
The Varsity is putting itself in
the limelight this weekend by
showing the famous and dull
double bill "Karamoja,” a docu
mentary film about the culture of
a primitive tribe, and the propa
ganda masterpiece “Half Way to
Hell."
If anyone missed these movies
when they played their lengthy
run at the Rex. this is probably
the last chance to see them.
There are several more en
trees including “Three for the
Show,” starting Sunday at the
Heilig. This musical, starring'
Betty Grable and Jack Lemmon,
is based on a 1940 movie, which
was based on a Somerset Maugh
am story, which was based on a
narrative poem by Tennyson,
who based it on an idea from a
sculptor friend, w'ho based his
idea on a tale he heard told in
Suffolk.
“Worst Ever”
Hailed by many as the worst
movie ever produced, “Vera
Cruz" is back Sunday at the Eu
gene Drive-In. The movie is full
of sex, violence, spectacle, pas
sion, and all the other things
some people object to.
It tells the touching friend- j
ship between a ruthless wanderer
(Burt Lancaster) and a broken

Sentimentality will be oozing I
from the McKenzie screen Fri
clay and Saturday when "The
Long Gray Line” is shown.
Starring Tyrone Power, this 1
movie traces the eventful career
of a man at West Point. It is
very well done, except for the
superfluous sentiment.
On the more palatable side
"The Detective" is still playing
at the Mayflower. Beginning
Sunday at the Mayflower are
two foreign films. "Illicit Inter

“Arthur," is still being done
in the University Arena Theater.
While the play is clever and in

is rather feeble.
