•Weekend Entertainment*
By Bob Rom
Emerald Reporter
There is entertainment for
everyone in Eugene this weekend.
The lover of the theater at its
best will find "East of Eden"
satisfying, which is playing for
the last time tonight at the Mc
Donald. “The subject is the only
one man has ever used as his
theme—the permanent war be
tween good and evil" John Stein
beck wrote concerning his novel,
upon which this powerful film is
based. The movie version deals
only with the last part of the
novel; however, it manages to
catch the novel's infinite variety
of life and clearly sets forth
Steinbeck's theme.
Guinness Comedy
Alec Guinness, admirers should
be present at the Mayflower Sun
day to see "The Detective.” Joan
Greenwood appears opposite
Guinness in this witty and brisk
comedy filmed in France and
England.
For anyone who has been long
ing to be in prison the Heilig is
offering a vicarious experience
in the form of a shocking double
bill starting Sunday—"Women's
Prison” and "Cell 2455, Death
Row.” “Women’s Prison" reveals
the real raw truth about man
smuggling inside the prison for
women. The story of a major
criminal, how he got that way,
what he did and what he must
do, comprise the material of
“Cell 2455, Death Row."
New Western
Opening Saturday at the Mc
Donald is a new western, "A
Strange Lady in Town." For
some peculiar reason Rork (Dana
Andrews) wants to run the
strange lady (Greer GarsonI out
of town. However, the question
