UCLA's relentless Bruins
moved into undisputed first place
in the Southern Division basket
ball race last weekend with two
easy wins over Stanford which
dropped the Indians two games
off the pace. Scores were 85-63
Friday and 72-59 Saturday.
In other conference action,
cellar-dwelling California won its
first league game of the season
Friday when the Bears nosed out
third-place USC, 58-57, at Berke
ley. The defending champion Tro
jans came back Saturday, how
ever, to drub the Bears 80-62.
UCLA's two wins over Stan
ford broke a previous tie be
tween the two clubs for first
place and left the Bruins two
games ahead of the pack with
only four remaining. Their lone
defeat came earlier at the hands
of Stanford at Palo Alto but this
pair gave the Bruins the series
and were their 126th and 127th
straight wins at their tiny West
wood gym.
Best individual performance
over the weekend was turned in
by Dick Welsh, USC guard, who
pumped in 39 points in the Tro
jans’ two games with California.
This included a 26-point spree in
Saturday’s game and lifted Welsh
into third place in conference
scoring. Ron Tomsic of Stanford
and Bob McKeen of California
retained first and second spots
with 34 and 29 points respective
ly in weekend action.
