    US Hails Ladies in White;
Shortage Remains Acute
National Nurse week, by art
of Congress and presidential
proclamation, lasts Monday
through Saturday of this week
and honors the nearly 400,000
registered professional nurses
and 75,000 licensed practical
nurses currently caring for pa
tients in the nation.
At the University, eight Yegis
tered nurses are employed. At
least one registered nurse is on
duty at all times.
The nurse shortage in America
remains acute. More than 50,000
professional nurses are needed
to meet essential civilian de
mands. Another 60,000 practical
nurses, if available, could be em
ployed this year.
There are two types of pro
fessional nursing education pro
grams: Diploma programs open
to high school graduates which

nursing. Both prepare students
for licensure and practice as a
professional nurse.
Presently more than 102.000
students are enrolled in profes
sional schools of nursing and
another 9,000 are in schools of
practical nursing.
