UO Junior to Fly
Over Euaene in Jet
Charles H. Greenley, junior in
business, has been selected to ride
in one of the F89 jet airplanes
which will fly over Eugene this
afternoon to officially open the
Armed Forces day parade.
Between two and four F-89's
from Portland Air Force base will
fly over the campus at 3 p.m.,
when the parade will begin. In
eluded in the parade will be the
air force and army ROTC units
at Oregon and living organization
entries in the annual Junior Week
end float parade.
Greenley was selected to ride in
1 one of the all-weather jet inter
ceptors because of his standing in
the AFKOTC junior class, accord
ing to Maj. N. N. Mihailov, assis
tant professor of air science and
tactics. Greenley is president of
Scabbard and Blade, military
honorary.
The F-89's, or "Scorpions," are
part of the Portland AFB jet
interceptor squadron, which is re
sponsible for air defense of the
Portland-Eugene area. The planes
are two-seated, for the pilot and
radar observer, and are equipped
to track and shoot down an air
i craft without having to see it.
Flying in the 600-mph range,
the F-89 carries 50 2.75-inch fold
ing fin rockets in each wing pod,
one rocket being capable of knock
ing down an airplane with a direct
hit. The Scorpions have a high
rate of climb, required of an inter- j
ceptor, and have an operating coil-'
ing of 45,000 feet altitude.
