drouth, O. Meredith Wilson, Uni
versity president said concerning
the WUS fund drive this week.
"To ostracize any portion of
mankind from a continuing pur
suit of truth Is to reduce our own
hope of complete knowledge," the
president pointed out. "It is to
the advantage of each country to
extend material aid and coopera
tion to all other countries freely
seeking truth."
WUS, with its impressive record
and worthy objectives, provides
the opportunity to help students

Money collected on campus dur
ing the WUS fund drive this week
will be used to "help students help
themselves,” Ted Goh, WUS gener
al chairman said. Through WUS
such items as tuberculosis sani
tariums, mimeographing equip
ment, books, paper and student
recreation centers are made avail
able to students in other countries.
Deadline for turning in contri
butions to WUS is 5 p. m. Friday,
according to Germaine UuMarche,
solicitations chairman. The best
response during the drive so far
lias come from faculty members
and off-campus students. Miss La
Marche said.
Oregon Art Grad
Shows Work in SU
Sculpture by Tom Hardy, grad
uate of Oregon’s school of archi
tecture and allied arta, is now on
exhibit in the Student Union gal
lery.
Hardy, who has received ac
claim from Alfred Frankenstein,
art critic of the San Francisco
Chronicle, is now a free lance
sculptor in Eugene. Frankenstein
described Hardy as "one of the
most Important sculptors now at
work in the United States."
Hardy makes use of the latest
tool known to sculpturers, the
welding torch. He uses it to cut
through Hheets of iron, rusting
them with the heat.
The exhibit, sponsored by the
SU art gaUery committee, started
April 19 and will continue until
May 15.

Humanities Meeting
Draws 20 of Faculty
About twenty members of the
University of Oregon faculty are
attending the Pacific Coast Con
ference on Humanities ut Reed
college In Portland today and Sat
urday.
Representatives from the Uni
versity departments of English,
foreign languages, philosophy, his
tory and from the schools of mus
ic and architecture and allied arts
will be present.
Also planning to atend are Hoyt
Trowbridge, professor of English
and chairman of the sophomore
honors program at he University,
and Ronald S. Crane, formerly
Distinguished Service Professor of
English at the University of Chi
cago, visiting the University this
spring term.
Crane, who is scheduled to give
a series of public lectures on cam
pus in May, is scheduled to open
the first session of the convention
thiH afternoon speaking on "Liter
ature, Philosophy, and the History
Of Ideas."
The editor of Modern Philology,
Crane ih the author of many books
and articles. He has just had pub
lished “The Languages of Criti-1
cism and the Structure of Poetry." j
He will teach next year at Stan
ford university.
Another lecturer in the conven
tion, Eliseo Vivas of Northwestern
university, is speaking here Tues
day evening.
