Oregon Seeks Important Win
Over Washington Hoopsters
By Bob Robinson
At«i»Unt Sports Editor
When Saturday night’s basketball game
between the Oregon Ducks and the \\ ashing
ton Huskies is completed and the Northern
Division standings are all tabulated it ought
to be much more apparent as to just what
the Webfoots’ chances are for ascending
championship heights this season.
Bill Borcher’s Ducks have been a very un
predictable outfit this year and it has been
just about anybody's guess as to who would
win when the Oregons took the floor.
After roaring to seven straight preseason
wins the Ducks went stale on their California
trip and lost three consecutive contests before
downing Sacramento State. Before this in
vasion of the “sunshine state" the Ducks were
looked on as being one of the teams to beat
for the Pacific Coast crown. However, when
Borcher’s lads flopped so completely against
both UCLA and Stanford, all eyes began to
turn to Oregon State and Idaho as the top
contenders in the Northern Division.
Ducks Rally
But Oregon was not to be denied. When it
came time to start league play they turned
a new leaf and began to display the fire and
class that they had been credited as having in
the first place.
The Webfoots were more than impressive
in their first game when they completely
smothered favored Idaho, 81-63. A second
night loss to the Vandals by a 60-53 tally was
due mainly to a terrific off night with their
shooting eyes by the Oregon players. If the
Ducks had been able to find the basket with
any consistency at all they no doubt would
have come out on top in this fracas, also.
After a week and a halt rest Borcher’s quint
returned to the court wars when they travelled
to Pullman, Washington for a pair of games
with the WSC Cougars. In these two encount
ers the Webfoots displayed a brilliant shoot
ing average and as a result came home with a
sweep of the series. Oregon took a total of
102 shots at the hoop and connected on an
amazing 51 of them for an even .500 average.
Washington State, led by their brilliant for
ward, Ron Benitink, gave the Ducks a close
tussle in the first contest when they fell by
only two points, 75-73; but on the second
evening the Oregon hoopers outclassed the
Cougars badly and won a 65-56 score. Only
some free substituting by Borcher held the
s^ore down as close as it was.
Front these last few games it is apparent
that this Oregon team is definitely on the up
swing and if they can reach their peak at just
the right time could be very tough to remove
from the running in X. D. play.
Anderson Important
Oregon’s hopes for a sweep of the Washing
ton series will rest heavily on the whole start
ing five but also of tremendous importance
will be the work of one particular individual.
This of course will be the Ducks’ sophomore
center. Max Anderson. To Anderson will go
the tough job of checking big Dean Parsons,
Washington’s leading scorer.
Parsons has led the Husky pointmaking all
year long and at the present time is sporting
a very respectable 16 points per game average.
If Anderson can hold Parsons in check and
still make a few counters of his own it will
be a terrific help to the Webfoot cause.
Another individual who Borcher and the
Ducks will depend on for a top notch perform
ance will be forward F,d Halberg. Halberg is
currently leading the Northern Division in
field goal shooting percentage and free throw
accuracy and is third in the conference in in
dividual scoring behind Ron Bennink of WSC
and Wade Halbrook of Oregon State.
Wegner Dangerous
Oregon’s two little men, Ken Wegner and
Barney Holland, will also have much respon
sibility heaped on their shoulders. Wegner, af
ter making the Northern Division all-star team
last season, has had a tough time getting start
ed this season because of injuries and con
centrated defenses. However, Wegner is al
ways dangerous and is liable to break loose
with a barrage of baskets at any time.
