Gaffney came to Oregon from Binghampton, N. Y., via San Ber nardino junior college. In Gaffney, the Ducks got one of the top J.C. halfbacks in Southern California. For two consecutive years he was chosen all-conference halfback in the southern Cal J.C. conference by the Los Angeles Times. He also played a year of varsity baseball, afternating between third base and shortstop. Gaffney graduated from Bing hampton Central high school in 1951. He had a scholarship offer to Brown university, member of the Ivy league, but decided to matriculate at San Bernardino. “At Binghampton Central high, he played two years of football and was chosen on the all-confer ence defensive team his senior year. Baseball is one of Gaffney’s favorite sports and he lettered three years in high school. He hit a resounding .452 one year. The 21-year-old Gaffney stands only 5’7", and weighs 174. De spite his size, he is a good blocker, a hard runner, and plays safety on defense. Only a junior, Gaffney will be back to play a lot of foot ball for Coach Len Casanova. you CAN'T GET A GIRL WITH A GULP OR,* How do you know when your test foot’s forward? Emerging in grand style with a 25-6 victory over the Idaho Vandals, the Ducks set right to work on how to stop the strong California offensive move. California showed its potential against the strong Washington Husky team, as they completely overpowered the Huskies 53-25. Both the Ducks and the Bears have the same won-lost percentage of four wins and four losses. The travel south by the Ducks this weekend will be more or less a revenge game as" the Ducks have not been able to win over the Bears since 1946, and took a 41-7 defeat last year. Stu dent Union Recreation Manager Lou Bellisimo explained that it would be possible for the teams to bowl throughout the IM season for $21.00. There had been some contro-' versy over the high price required 1 for a team to enter the league, as ! prior to this change, it had cost $31.50 for a living organization to enter a team. This price change should make a decided change in the number of teams that enter the IM league. The other item of business tak en up at the meeting concernedI the matter of freshmen who are veterans. In an amendment to the intramural rules, it is now pos sible for any freshman who is el igible to live in a fraternity to par ticipate in that house’s sports ac tivities. This ruling pertains to veterans, as they are the only ones that are allowed to live in the houses as freshmen. Sport Staff ♦ Desk Kdltor: Sam Vahey. Staff: Jerry Pool, Ilruee Ten nant and Doug May.
