    Webfoots Depart for Cougar Clash
'ivhe University of Oregon football squad finished prepara
tions for this Saturday’s tussle with Washington State with a
short but snappy drill Thursday afternoon, the Ducks will de
part for Pullman late Friday morning. •
Coach Len Casanova ran his charges through an extensive
defensive session again Thursday in an effort to have the \\ eb
foots well prepared for the Cougars’ Michigan-style single wing
attack. A team made up of second and third stringers attempted
to imitate W. S. C. formations in order to give the Ducks an
idea of what they would be encountering Saturday.
Also, some time was spent run
ning through offensive formations.
The Webfoots seemed to have
plenty of five and looked to be in
high spirits for the coming game.
Cougars Weak Defensively
In view of the fact that in games
thus far the Cougars have demon
strated little defensive strength the
Ducks will no doubt try every play
they know in an effort to run their
hosts into a state of confusion
early in the game.
In their first two games Ore
gon showed a very potent rushing
attack and in last Saturday's bat
tle with UCLA they came out with
a much improved aerial game.
Whether the Ducks will try to run
against the Cougars or elect to
take to the air to gain their yard
age is a question which will not
be answered until Saturday. If
Casanova chooses to concentrate
on the ground game in the early
stages of the tussle, Dick James,
Farrell Albright, and Cece Hodges
will probably do most of the ball
packing. If he decides to open up
with lots of passes George Shaw
will do the throwing. Shaw
sparkled in the last game and has
looked good in practices again this
week. When Mr. Shaw is having
a good game he can give his op
ponents all kinds of trouble.
Kircher Switches Line-up
On the other side of the fence.
Al Kircher, Washington State
coach, has made up several
switches in his starting line-up in
an effort to find a winning com
bination. Ever since he came to
w. S. C. his teams have been!
noted for their strong passing at- j
tacka so the Webfoots can expect
lots of aerials when they take the
field against the Cougars. Bob
Burkhart, the chunky tailback!

strong College of Pacific eleven,
26-20. Last week-end the Cougars
were completely smothered by the
Iowa Hawkeyes, 54-12.
Oregon started out their season
with an upset, 20-12, victory over
Nebraska but lost their next two
games, to Stanford, 7-0, anu io
UCLA, 12-0.
By comparing those scores one
comes to the conclusion that this
game should just about be rated
a toss-up. The breaks could play
a very important part in the game.
