WRA Making Plans
For Bowling Tourney
Women’s Recreation association
is now making plans for the fall
intramural women's bowling tour
nament. The round robin tourna
ment. is slated to get under way
Oct. 15, and run through Dec. 3.
There will be room for only
eight teams in the competition so
all interested houses, dorms and
co-ops should get their entries in
ao soon as possible.
October 13 Deadline
The house entries should be turn
ed in to Lucia Knepper, at the
Alpha Chi Omega sorority, or to
the athletic cage in Gerlinger hall.
Deadline for the entries is Oct. 13.
The first eight entries to be turned
in will be the ones which make up
the tournament.
Each squad will bowl each oth
er team once. There is room for
six players on a team, four regu
lars and two subs. No previous
experience is needed to qualify
for a spot on a team.
Any questions regarding the
tournament should be directed
to the YV’RA house representa
tive or Miss Knepper, at A C'hl
O.
Interest has always been high
in the tournament. Last year ten
women's squads competed for the
championship, with Zeta Tau Al
pha winning out. The ZTA’s won
the playoff match from Highland
House, who had tied with Gamma
Phi Beta in one of the leagues.
Handy Outstanding
Jane Handy was the outstand
ing bowler in the 1952 tourney
averaging a 14o game.
This year's matches will be
rolled off Thursday afternoon,
starting at 4 p.m. The teams will
roll three lines a day.

For Cougars
Bub Nelson
Emerald Sports Writer
Coach Len Casanova ran his
footballers through a rugged de
fensive scrimmage Wednesday aft
ernoon in an effort to sharpen the
squad for the Saturday clash with
the Washington State college Cou
gars at Pullman, Wash.
The defense, however, looked
quite unimpressive against the
W8C plays directed at it. Casa
nova described it as ragged and
stated it would have to improve
to hold the Cougars, who are re
puted to have a potent offense.
Burkhart Top Threat
Heading the touchdown threats
is senior Quarterback Bob Burk
hart, 5’11 and 195 pounds. He
passes, runs, and kicks, and has
been one of the coast’s top of
fensive stars for three years. Be
cause of injuries he played little
against Iowa but is expected to be
ready to go against the Ducks.
Other WSC stars are Left Half
Wayne Berry, who tossed for two
touchdowns against Iowa, and

giant Cnd Howard McCants, who
stands 6’8 and weighs 225 pounds.
While the Cougars have shown
a good offense thus far this sea
son, their defense has been ex
tremely porous. They lost to USC
29-13, beat tough College of Pa
cific 26-20, and then were swamp
ed by Iowa 54-12.
Cougars Not Easy
Lest the Iowa score should lead
some people to believe the Cou
gars will be pushovers against the
Ducks, Oregon Line Coach Vem
Sterling, who scouted the WSC
Iowa contest, stated the score of
that game by no means gives a
true indication as to the strength
of the Cougars.
WSC, he pointed out, will be at
home against Oregon and will be
playing before a Dad s Day-Home
coming crowd, and win be eager
to atone for last week’s loss. Ster
ling also made reference to the
USG and COP games as more like
ly tip offs on the Cougar’s ability.
