    Goes Both Ways
GEORGE SHAW, starting quarterback for Coach Len Casanova’s
University of Oregon Ducks, will be called on to do both offensive and
defensive duties when the local eleven meets Nebraska this Saturday
in a nationally-televised game from Lincoln, Neb. Shaw is a two
year letter winner.

right end, will captain this
year’s Duck eleven through a
loaded schedule starting at
' Nebraska Saturday night.
“Big Em” led the thirty-eight
man squad through a heavy of
fensive pass drill yesterday, 48
hours before take-off for the
Cornhuskers opener.
Probable starters for one of the
smallest teams ever fielded by Ore
gon, will be George Shaw, at the
pivot spot, Cece Hodges fullback,
Dick James at right half, and Walt j
Gaffney at left half, with the left
side of the forward wall held down
by John Reed, Hal Reeve, and Ken
Sweitzer, centered by Ron Pheister
and flanked by Jack Patera, Keith
Tucker and Em Barnes.

George Shaw is another player
who has gone both ways. As a
freshman he set an NCAA pass in
terception record with 13 passes
picked off.
Jack Patera played both offense
and defense under the platoon
system and should add valuable ex
perience and ability to the center
of the line.
The new NCAA substitution rule
will divide football games into six
quarters: 15, 11, and 14 minutes in
length. ,
