12-12 DEADLOCK
Green, White Spring Grid Teams
Tie in Intra-Squad Scrimmage
rwo evenly matched Oregon
football teams, garbed in green and
white jerseys, fought to a 12-12
deadlock Saturday at Hayward
field in the Spring Sports day foot
ball scrimmage, first event of the
day.
The White team, quarterbacked
by Barney Holland, scored first on
a pass to Farrell Albright after
approximately 19 minutes of play
ing time had elapsed.
The Greens came back strong,
however, marching 70 yards to the
goal line on a number of fine passes
by quarterback Don Holt and the
line - smashing efforts of sopho
more fullback Dean Van Leuven.
Dick James was the lad who
chalked up the six points, as he
bucked the line from three vards
out.
The game then settled down to
a battle of defensive units, with
r
neither team scoring for some
time. Late in the fray, however,
White quarterback Holland
dropped a pass in the waiting arms
of halfback Tom Elliott in the
' end zone, and the Greens trailed,
j 12-6.
Don Holt and his green-jerseyed
; mates were not to be denied, how
, ever, as they set out on another 70
yard march which ended with Walt
Gaffney crossing the goal line
from one yard out. Gaffney’s run
ning had much to do with setting
up the score, as the tricky JC
transfer picked up yardage several
time on the way down the field.
The Whites took over the ball
with only a few minutes remain
ing, and despite a pair of long
passes by Holland which passed
through the arms of his team
mates, there was no more scoring
in the tilt.
