Nine Students
Get Scholarships
^Announcement of nine major
scholar.ships for the school year
1952-53 has been made by the- of
fice of student affairs.
The Standard Oil scholarships,
which arc awarded to one student
from each class, amount to $500
each. They are awarded for leader
ship quality, scholastic achieve
ment and financial need.
Winners of the Standard Oil
scholarships are PCter Williams,
freshman in business administra
tion, Konald Lowell, sophomore in
liberal arts, and Helen Elizabeth
Jackson, junior in English A high
school senior who will enter the
University in the fall will receive
the fourth award.
The Zimmerman scholarships
amounting to $250 each have been
awarded to Christopher P. Wil
liams. junior in general science,
and Gwen Paugh, junior in foreign
languages.
The Joseph P. Zimmerman-Eva
Zimmerman Scholarship Fund is
provided by funds left by Lois Zim
merman who was a former student
at the University and received her
B.A. in English in 1928.
The Robert G. Jones Phi Gamma
Delta scholarship of $135 has been
awarded to Larry Hobart, junior
in journalism.
Edward Toyooka. freshman in
liberal arts, has won the Asso
ciated Students of the University
of Oregon Student Court Scholar
ship amounting to $165.
Zonta Club, a Eugene women’s
serwee club, has awarded a schol
arship of $150 to LaVaun Kreu
ger, sophomore in journalism. This
scholarship is based on scholarship,
need and good citizenship.
Clothing Collection
To Assist Korea
A drive to collect clothing which
will be sent to Korea is being spon
sored this week by the YM-YWCA
international affairs committee.
Living organizations are being
asked to collect any old clothes
they wish to donate and place it in
boxes. Collections will be made
Friday afternoon.
Cars and workers are needed to
help in the clothing collection,

Memorial Day Time
Hours the Student Union will be
open during the Memorial day

hours will be 8:30 a.m. to 9:30

accepted in the office of ASUO
President Pat Dignan. The peti
tions are available in the ASUO
office on the third floor of the Stu
dent Union. Deadline is 5:30 p.m.

manager for Safeway Stores, will
be on campus Thursday to inter
view those students interested in
entering the retail field as a busi
ness career. Appointments for in
terviews may be obtained in the
graduate placement office, Emer
ald hall.
• A Duckling Counseling meet
ing will be held at Gerlinger on
Thursday at 6:15 p.m. for all peti
tioners who didn't attend the first
instruction meeting. Girls who wish
to be “big sisters” for next fall's
incoming freshmen women must
attend one of these meetings, ac
cording to Bobbette Gilmore,
Duckling counselor chairman.
• Applications are now being
accepted for business manager of
Old Oregon, alumni magazine, ac
cording to Les Anderson, alumni
secretary. Letters of application
must be turned in to the alumni of
fice on the mezzanine floor of the
Student Union before Monday. In
terviews will be scheduled later.
The business manager will serve
for the 1952-53 school year.
• A silent movie on “Von Stro
heim and Realism” will be shown
at 7 p.m. today in 207 Chapman.
There will be no 9 p.m. showing,
due to the length of the movie,
which is two and three-quarters
hours long. There is no admission
charge.
• The Student Union Award
banquet will be held next Wednes
day at 6 p.m. in the SU. Those who
plan to attend the banquet and
have not replied by the return post
cards, are urged to do so immedi
ately, Bobbie Howard, chairman of
the banquet, has announced. Short
silks and suits are in order for the
banquet.
• “Tillie’s Punctured Ro
mance," Mack Sennett’s famous si
lent era comedy, will be the Sun
day movie at the Student Union.
It stars Charlie Chaplin and Marie
Dresler. The movie will be shown
at 2:30 and again at 4:30 p.m. in
the Student Union ballroom. Ad
mission is 30 cents.

students interested in elementary
teacher training here Thursday at
4 p.m. in the education school.
