JV's Schedule Weekend Tilts with Oregon State The Junior Varsity baseball squad will be looking' for its first win in conference play when it tangles with the Oregon State col lege Junior Varsity in the third and fourth games between the two teams. The first game will be played today on the Oregon State field and tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. the Ducklings will play host to the OSC nine. The Staters took the first con test played earlier this season by a 9-8 count and in the second game they smashed the Oregon boys 14-1. Albright Stars Farrell Albright will start on the mound today for the Ducklings and Bill Blodgett will be kept in t'ae bull pen in case Albright gets into trouble. Don Hedgepeth will round out the battery. In the Sat urday contest Gene Lewis will make his first start on the mound of Oregon and Hedgepeth will catch again. Bob Wagner will start at first base and probably bat at his usual clean-up position. Jim Johnson arid Paul Byhre will round out the keystone at shortstop and second base, respectively. The usual toss up at third base will take place with either Bill Loch or Gene Duncan in line to get the nod. Marlett in Left Neal Marlett is a sure -starter in left field, Jim Spiekefman will probably start in center and Jim Tennyson will get the coach’s OK out in right field. Thursday afternoon the JV’s held a practice scrimmage with the Northwest Christian college varsltty. The final unofficial score was 'll to 3 in favor of the JV’s. After the games this weekend the Oregon Junior Varsity will still have two contests with OSC for the following weekend. This will climax their schedule. If OSC can win these next four games it will mean a clean sweep for the Staters. If Oregon wins three out of the four it will put the season play into a tie and if Oregon can win four out of the four it will give them the mythical title over the Oregon State squad. Football Team Looking Sharp In Spring Drills The air was filled with passes Thursday afternoon at the 14th session of Oregon football spring practice. Quarterbacks Hal Dun ham and Barney Holland were throwing well, with end's Ron Ly man and Monte Brethauer receiv ing in capable fashion. Also several running plays were •clicked off. Toward the end of the session, the defensive platoon was consistently causing trouble for the squad attempting to advance the ball. — Earlier in the week, the first major casualty ot the drills oc curred as freshman Bill Spores suffered a fractured shin bone. Also, running halfback Tom El liot was nursing a slight lip bruise after Thursday’s drill. Head Coach Len Casanova stated that he was very pleased with the enthusiasm and hustle of the gridders. The greying men tor has not taken an active coach ing role as he is still recovering from an operation for removal of a spinal disc early in April. “We are showing fire,” Casa nova stated, “which I was not (Please turn to page five) DANCE 9 P.M. until... DIAL 5-6246 Tennis Team Set For Home Match Against Vandals The VVebfoot net team should see its first home action of the Northern Division season Satur day afternoon, barring rain or other unforseen circumstances, in a match scheduled for 2:00 p.ni. against the University of Idaho’s Vandals. The Ducks were rained out in what was to bo the home season opener last Wednesday against Oiegon State. That match has been moved up to Wednesday, May 7. Challenge play was the main thing on the schedule Wednesday and Thursday, with Bill Rose challenging Tom Macdonald W ed nesday for the number one singles spot in a close three set battle. Macdonald came out bn top thus earning the right to play first s i n gl e s in Saturday’s action. Thursday Jack Neer challenged llose for the number two position but was defeated, thus remaining in number three spot for Satur day. Also on Thursday, Ron Low ell played Neil George for fourth position, with each taking one set. The third and deciding set will be played off this afternoon with the loser taking the fifth singles spot for the Vandal match. In doubles, Neer and Rose will team up against the top Vandal duo, and Macdonald and George will form the second team. Due to the fact that little is known about the Vandal squad, Coach Bob Laurence was reluc tant to make any predictions con cerning Saturday’s fray except that “we will have the advantage of playing on our own courts.” Laurence was very pleased with the showing of his own charges this week, and especially with his top twb singles men, Macdonald and Rose. Macdonald was some what below par in last week’s OSC match, but looks like he will be at his peak against Idaho. Next' on the Duck list will be WSC Monday in another home contest, followed by Wednesday’s rescheduled OSC tilt. Golf Team to Face WSC, Idaho In Northern Division Matches The undefeated University of Oregon golf team will compete in their second and third conference meet of the season this weekend at the Eugene Country club. Coach Sid Milligan feels that the Duck squad should have little difficulty in defeating the Wash ington State squad on Friday and the Idaho golf, team on Saturday. Idaho’s Stringfield, who is the Vandals’ number one man, will provide tough competition for Bob Atkinson and Fred Mueller of the University of Oregon. The squads will tee off at 8:30 for the morn ing play and the afternoon rounds will last until 5:30. Ihe Oregon golfers have com pleted their qualifying scores, With Don Kreiger being low man with the score bf 283 which is 5 under par. This is very spectacular for a golfer who is competing in his first year of varsity com petition. Fred Mueller is in his mid season form and has completed his qualifying rounds with a score of 289. His short game is good, es pecially the wedge play. Bob Atkinson, who is in his usual good form finished third with a score of 293. Captain Ron Clark finished fourth with a score of 301. His drives and irons tc the green are particularly good Bud Cross and A1 Mundle com pleted their qualifying rounds, finishing close fifth and sixth with scores of 307 and 309. These six top golfers played foi their position on the team for the coming meet on Thursday of this week. Ron Clark played excellent golf, shooting a three under pal 69 for the number one position. Boh Atkinson will be the numfc|ei two man and Don Krelger, who also shot a three under par 69 will be in the third spot. A1 Mun dle, who won medalist honors last week against Oregon State, will be in the fifth position and Bud Cross will be the number six man. The team is very strong in depth, with Bill Tuefel and King Shanks, who have tremendous po tential, in the 7th and 8th posi tion. The Oregon golf team is in an excellent position to be the con ference champions with the Uni versity of Washington being their strongest competition in the Nor thwest.
