BOARD APPROVES NEW JOURNALISM BUILDING

Teaching Hospital Approved
A teaching hospital for the Uni
versity of Oregon Medical School
was given board approval. Esti
mated to cost $4,700,000. the hos
pital will provide 350 beds. It rep
resents the largest expenditure of
money for a single building made
by the state, Dr. R. E. Kleinsorge,
chairman of the state board's
building committee, said.
The new journalism building
would cost about $500,000, Charles
Byrne, chancellor of the state sys
tem of higher education, said. Bids
will be called for as soon as the
money is available, he stated.
Others Given Priority
Other state institution buildings
approved Tuesday, in order of pri
ority, are:
A chemical engineering wing at
Oregon State college, a physical
education building at Southern
Oregon college of Education and
a biological and agricultural sci
ence building at Oregon State.
The list of buildings planned for
Oregon by priority and according
to the two-year periods outlined by
the board Monday is as follows:
For the 1953-55 biennium—jour
nalism school, $500,000; expansion
of architecture building, $500,000;
dental school, $1,500,000; addition
to men's physical education build
ing, $150,000; armory, $300,000;
administration building, $600,000.

“KehablUtatlon" Program
Committee approval was given
to an $118,000 “rehabilitation" pro
gram for University buildings in
cluding $64,000 for the remodeling
of Johnson hall. Money for the
rehabilitation will be taken from
present funds.
Johnson hall remodeling will in
clude conversion of space occupied
by the Guild theater into offices
for the college of liberal arts and
the graduate school and remodel
ing of the second floor to make use
of wasted space. When the pro
gram is completed, the general ex
tension division offices now in the
UMCA building, on Kincaid street,
will be moved into Johnson hall,
Byrne said.
