    Trackmen Topple Washington State
By Rick Tarr
The University of Oregon track
men practically cinched the North
ern division dual meet champion
ship by defeating Washington
State at Hayward field Saturday
C7'2 to 63'i.
Am there are only two meets left
with the comparatively weak
teams of Idaho and Oregon State
it looks like Coach Hill Bom-rmun
may walk off with his second ND
crown in four seasons at Oregon.
Fortunately the two toughest foes,
Washington and Washington
State, were met on home ground.
The next meet with Idaho on
May 3rd will Is- the Duck’s only
dual meet encounter away from
linme. Oregon Slate will come to
Hayward field the next weekend.
A week later the Northern division
will take plure In Seattle followed
l>y the Pacific Coast conference
meet at Kugene May 23-24.
Saturday’s meet might have
been a duplicate of the Washing
ton thriller if LaVerne Torgerson :
hadn't fallen early in the low
hurdle event. He and Pete Mulllna
were running one-two up to that
time.
Had they finished that way the
score going into the mile relay
would have been a narrow 64 >■£ to
til margin for Oregon. The name
situation ex luted laat week against
Washington.
Ah It turned out, strong second
by pole-vaulter ltay Packwood and
a third by Larry Blunt kept Ore
gon out of danger and allowed
Bowerman to save the efforts of
Bill Kell, AI Martin, and Jack
Hutchins in the relay.
Ted Anderson, the fourth mem
ber of last week’s record breaking
team anchored Saturday's lap but
was beaten by inches with Cltnt i
Richardson's fine drive in the final
20 yards.

was In the Shuttle hurdles. The
Cottage Grove trio set the new
record at 37.1.
Pleasant Hill swamped all com
petition in taking the ‘C honors
while breaking two records. Hiving
up to expectations. Dale McCor
mick .shattered Dean Van Leuven's
shot put record of 45' lO'^" by
heaving the 12 pound ball 51'
1 9-11". The new mark of 11:45.8
In the distance medley bettered
their own record of last year by .
eight seconds.
A close duel between Medford
and Grant in the final mile relay
topped off the class 'A' meet Sat- j
fcurday afternoon. With Medford
ahead 63*a to 59, the G-men had;
to finish two places ahead of Med- j
ford to taka the crown.
Second place was the best they ]
could do, however. Medford's anc- |
hor man Don Spinas was barely
able to beat off a determined drive j
by Doug Sandy of Grant in the ]
^ final 220 yards. i
(■rants Pass took third and Jef- j ,
ferson Of Portland finished fourth j ,
In one of the few relays that an ,
‘A* standard wasn't bettered. Med

What Price Glory?
Want to raise your bowling !
avcrave ? Then just get good and
mad. At least it helped Warren
Price, journalism professor. In
faculty league play Sunday night
at the SU he posted a 450 series
—mediocre, in his opinion.
So Kegler Price got angry,
stayed after his teammates had
left. The result? A 620 series,
compounded of 213, 220, and 187
games.
