Spring Football Drills Continue;
Casanova Expected Back Today
Head Football Coach Len Casa
nova was scheduled to arrive on
the scene this morning to take
charge of the University of Ore
gon's spring grid practice now in
its third day.
Casanova is recovering from a
■najor back operation which forced
him to postpone his return from
an alumni tour of California for
two weeks.
Meanwhile Coaches Gene Har
low, Jack Roche, Johnny McKay
and ex-Duck Center Brad Ecklund
have been handling the chores.
Harlow described the attitude as
good. “We’ve had to make quite
a few changes, but everyone wants
to play. They’ve shown a lot of
pepper for this time of the year,”
BOWLING...
Results in Tuesday’s mixed
doubles bowling were as follows:
League no. 1:
Wada and Takasumi 4, Gillmore
and Lally 0. Leslie and Woodruff
4, Towata and Takano 0. Miller
and Barber 4, Phillips and Spring
er 0. Corbitt and Allen 2, Navasa
ka and Furakawa 2.
League no. 2:
Lawrence and O’Brien 2, Gold
enberg and Goldenberg 2. Carr and
Weed 2, Mallatt and Abraham 2.
Hablett and Husted 4, Fitzgerald
and Jones 0. Hagedorn and Gand
ies 3, Gatton and Mondale 1,
Harlow said.
Hallows mention of changes was
in reference to the wholesale
movement of ends to tackle and
guard positions. The Ducks have
had a surplus of flankers and an
obvious scarcity of experienced
tackles, guards and centers.
Quarterbacks Hal Dunham, Bar
ney Holland and Wally Russell
were pressed into passing roles
Tuesday afternoon; McKay and
Roche drilled the backs on short,
flat tosses. Harlow worked with
the remainder of the squad, the
linesmen, who number around the
40 mark. They stressed blocking
and tackling, mostly in dummy
drills.

Hitting Practice;
WSC Due Friday
Coach Don Kitsch directed his
varsity baseball squad through a
typical drill Tuesday on a damp
and slightly muddy Howe field
diamond. Hitting practice occupied
most of the afternoon, with each
batter getting in about five good
licks at the plate.
Joe Sugura was meeting the ball
well, ur, he rapped out several lino
drives that would have gone for
base hits in a game. 1'ltcher Don
Selgmund also sent several scorch
ing liners Into the outfield.
The varsity hurlers were switch
ing off at throwing to the hitters,
with freshman catcher Hon Bottler
spending most of the drill behind
the plate.
The Ducks are preparing to
meet the Washington State Cou
gars Friday and Saturday in tho
Northern Division opener to bo
playod here in Eugene.
An indication of the strength of
past Cougar baseball teams is giv

years’ ND baseball races. Buck
Bailey’s men finished first from
1947 to 1950 and were second last
year.
