Ducks Sweep Pair with Pilots, Lose Non-League Tilt to Orange Ducks Take Pilots 3-2 Both Contests By John Whitty Coach Don Kirsch's Oregon baseball squad played host to the Portland Pilots Saturday on Howe Field, as the two teams met in a double header. The Ducks were forced to come from behind in both contests, as they won the first tilt 3-2 and then came back to take the nightcap by the same score. Nelson Starts Attack Daryle Nelson, the second man up for Oregon, hit a Texas Leaguer double which went over the head of shortstop Pete Lulich, but was out of the reach of Port land's center fielder, Stan Bozich. In the Pilot’s half of the sec ond inning Julie Fajer, the fifth man in the batting order, lined a single into left field, but he got no farther than first base as rifle armed Ron Bottler caught him attempting to steal second base. Pat Gilroy started the ball roll ing for Portland in the third stan za when he beat out a dribbler down the third base line. Mike Poel, the visitors' backstop, struck out, but Gilroy went to second on the strikeout pitch. Freshman Hurler Norm Forbes apparently lost his control mom entarily and he gave the next man, John Becic, a free pass to first base. With runners on first and second, Forbes tried to pick Gilroy off, but Duck shortstop Nick Schmer muffed the throw and both Pilots advanced. Shaw Homers Another boot followed a mo ment later, aa Daryle Nelson couldn’t hold on to Pilot Short stop Pete Lulich's bounding grounder and both Gilroy and Becic crossed the plate to put Portland In the lead, 2-0. Oregon came roaring back in their half of the third frame to knot the count at 2-2. Freshman George Shaw led off the inning with a towering home run which came to earth far behind Port land Centerfielder Stan Bozich. Both Nelson and Jim Livesay grounded out, shortstop to first, and it looked as if the inning were about over. Duck clean-up hitter (I’lease turn to paye five) i » • i i MENTOR KIKSCH ... two wins and a loss JV's Open Slate With 11-2Triumph Big Jim Tennyson led his Duck Junior Varsity baseball team mates to a one sided 11 to 2 vic tory over the local Eugene high Axemen Saturday on the Duck lings’ field. It was the JV's season opener. Tennyson paced the attack for the winners as he drove in three runs on three hits in four trips to the plate, one of which was a long triple. Coach Colonel John I.ondahl used three pitchers for the Duck lings in the tussle. Farrell Al bright, Don Delaney and Bill Blod gett were the three moundsmen who saw action. Albright started and gave up both Eugene runs in the first in ning, but settled down until his team mates gathered three runs themselves before he was relieved by Delaney. Albright was awarded the win as the Ducks were ahead when he left the game. Junior Varsity standouts in the hitting department besides Tenny son were Second Baseman Paul Byhre who collected two tilts and four runs butted in, and First Baseman Bob ‘Honus’ Wagner who knocked in two Oregon runs. (I Jay Dean's Triple Paces Beaver Win By Bob Zwald Oregon State’s highly - touted ; baseball team scored three runs in I the top half of the eighth inning I to defeat the Oregon Ducks 1-1 in I a tight exhibition game played at | Howe field Friday afternoon. The | loss was Oregon’s fifth in eight | pre-season games. A large shirt-sleeved crowd en i joyed sunny skies and fine pitch ing performances by left-handefs Don White of Oregon State and Don Siegmund of Oregon. White scattered six hits over the entire nine innings and struck out four batters. Siegmund allowed only one hit and struck out four in th®* six innings he worked. Oregon State opened the scaring in the fifth Inning when Danny Johnson walked, stole second, and then name home on Jay Dean’s long triple over the bank in left center. Dean tried to stretch the hit into a home run but was rut down at the plate on u relay from George Shaw to Jim IJvesuy to Daryle Nelsn to Kon Bottler. The Beavers batted around the order in the three-run eighth in ning and found reliefer Bill Bottler for four hits. Jay Dean was safe at first on a fielder’s choice ufter Bud Suirtcliff had singled. Pitcher Don White then hit a double-play ball to shortstop Pete Williams but William’s wide throw to sec ond base put the runners on sec ond and third. A .single to center field by Beav er shortstop Bobby Buob brought in both runs. After Pete Gootfbrod was out on a ground ball to sec ond, Duane Helbig and John Thomas hit successive singles to score Buob with the third and final run of the Inning. In the last of the ninth inning Oregon entered the scoring col umn. With one away, Pete Willi ams doubled to left and came home on a single by Ron Phillips.
