Webfoots to Host Linfield Wildcats In Doubleheader The University of Oregon’s base ball team opens its home season this afternoon at 1:30 on Howe Field, where the Webfoot nine will play host in two gumes to the Linfield University Wildcats. I ..infield's team is expected to be fairly strong, for they won the Northwest Conference champion ship last year and were co-holdera of the title the year before. In games played so far this year, the Wildcats have chalked up a 2-1 record. They defeated Vanport and Oregon College of Education and dropped a contest with the strong Oregon State squad. The Ducks, fresh from their barnstorming tour of Southern California, will be out to start the year at home in the right way. On the California tour, the Webfoots were able to win only one contest, while losing four to their op ponents. I.lnfleld Is coached by Koy Hei ne r, a familiar figure to followers of the Portland Berners, for Koy has spent his last seven or eight summers toiling on the mound for the Portland representatives of the Pacific Coast league. Helser, who is still connected with the Beavers, also acts ns as sistant football coach at the Mc Minnville school, as well as work ing with co-coach Paul Durham In guiding the fortunes of the Wild cat basketball team. A good deal of the batting i strength of the Linfield diamond | unit lies in the warclubs of Bob Martin, an outfielder, and Norm ; Welch, who holds down the first : base position for the visitors. Both are known as hard hitters and are to be feared Klnnek it Ace Hurler In today's double-header, Helser will probably start his ace hurler, Stan Blanck. in the first tilt. Blanck is a left-hander who was the mainstay of the Linfield pitch ing' staff last season, and bin de liveries will undoubtedly prove troublesome to the Webfoots. Blanck's battery mate will prob ably be Chuck Bafaro, who does a very capable job at handling the chores behind the plate. Oregon's coach. Don Kirsch list ed a tentative starting lineup to face the left-handed slants of Blanck. It follows. Catcher, Kon Bottler, freshman! pitcher, Bill Mays, senior; first Itase, Kon Phillips, sophomore; sec ond base, Doryle Nelson, senior; shortstop, Clarence Schmer, jun ior; third base, Karl Averlll, jun ior; left field, Norval Ritchey, senior; center field, George Hhuvv, freshman; right field, Joe Sugura, senior. In the event that Helser starts a right-hander against the Ducks, Kirsch will muke a number of changes to strengthen his hitting power. Phil Scttecase, a senior, will replace Ron Phillips at first base. Freshman Pete Williams will start at shortstop, and Jim Idve say, a junior, will take over for Norval Ritchey at the left field position. If Blanck starts the first games, as expected, these replacements will be made in the second game. Pete Williams, freshman shortstop may not be able to play in either contest due to the fact that he has a sprained thumb which may keep him out of action. Both contests will be 3evcn In- " ning games. On Friday the Ducks play their first game with Oregon State this year, and on Saturday they meet the Portland university Pilots in a double-header. The tilts on both days will be played here in Eugene. SPORTS STAFF Desk Editor: John Whltty. Staff: Bill Gurney, Ron Ricketts, BUI Norval, Norman Webb.
