Palouse Trip Vandals, WSC Next on Duck Swim Agenda By Ron Ricketts Keeping their conference record in the win column will be tough for the Duck swimmers as they take on Washington State College at Pullman and the University of Idaho at Moscow this Friday and Saturday. The Cougars will probably give Oregon its stiffest test yet this .season. They have been highly un derrated in the northern division. Actually, they have the conference champion in the 1500-meter free style and also they have the num fder one man in the 200-yard back stroke. They are very strong in the dis -tance events and have several of the strongest breaststrokers in the conference. Coach Borchardt fig ures the meet to be very- close, with the second and third places to de cide the winner. The OSO meet indicated that about half of the Duck swimmers were not in shape. As a result, . much of this week’s practice will ,-be spent on conditioning. Since the team must be cut to 12 men for the coming trip, there will be time trials on Wednesday for the men which have not clinched spots. Yosh Terada looked good in win ning the 100-yard individual med ley at OSC. His 1:00.7 was one of the best times recorded on the coast this year. This weekend he'll be entered in the 200-yard back stroke, the 400-yard freestyle re lay, and the individual medley. § 6 i STRIKES and SPARES 8 from the SU cellar By Jim Mahoney Are you often embarrassed at your inability to answer simple ■questions about your University? Ate you shunned because of your -ignorance as to the purpose of the SU? Have you ever been refused ice cubes at a party because you -knew not the reason for the bowl ing alley in the basement of Erb .Memorial? Have you? Then read on. Here for the first time is the 4-eal story behind this insidious .^game. Bowling for sport first appears ~^n recorded history as early as the 12th century, wdien William Vitz >«tephens mentions in his “Survey 'of London” that "... on summer ■^•holidays certain youths took exer cise, amongst other pastimes, in ‘jactus lapidum’ (throwing of atones). To engage, the citizen ■ ^needs must go outside the city and ■center within closed walls.” I should .-think so! In 1240 the Bishop of VVorchester • recognized the alleys as ‘‘scenes of ' vice and debauchery” and forbade the clergy to attend the games. Such Goings On Edward III, in 1366, fearful that bowling might replace archery as the chief means of relaxation among the troops, had Parliament ■ ■issue a memorandum condemning bowling as one of the games “lead ing to dishonesty and without use or-profit.” And, from bad to worse, Henry VTH, a fine one to talk about anything, declared it an illegal practice: “No one, by him self, factor, deputy, servant, or other person, shall, for his or theft-, jgain, lucre or living, keep, have, „4bold, occupy, exercise, or maintain, any common house, alley, or pla(?e ©f bowling." He ordered his magis trates to “search suspected tene ments and make arrests.” Henry VIII died of satiation. Charles I was bowling at North ; Jbamptonshire when he was caught ©.nd beheaded. Bowling was carried to America the hold of the same ship that (brought the common European d«ouse mouse to these shores. f Please turn to page five) Husky Controls Casaba —Eugene Register Guard Rhoto LOOK OUT, MAC_Bob Peterson couldn't quite graftp the ball, but It looks as though he succeeded In fouling Washington Center Doug McClary during the Oregon-Husky series in Mc Arthur court last week-end.
