Many men on the University of
Oregon campus would give their!
eye teeth for the Job of Edward
H. Byrne. Thin little man dressed
In green la the only man allowed
to upend all night, six nights u
week, In Carson Hall.
“It’a a great, life," Byrne said.
"The girls are all nice."
Byrne'a official job consists of
locking the doors at cloaing houra,
letting In late Comera, taking a
tour of the outaldc of the build
ing every hour, and aweeping and
buffing the lobby floor after thinga '
have settle down.
Watches Cars
Besides these official dutiea, ,
Carson's "house father" keeps an
eye on the cars belonging to the '
residents, listens for alarm bells,
chases off eager males, and helps
solve numerous other problems for
the girls.
One week-end night about IS
minutes before closing hours, some
praknsters took the elevator up to
fifth floor and turned it off. With
in u few minutes there was a
crowd of girls standing around
the elevator floor In the lobby
Wondering why it wouldn’t come,
tl'u Byrne fell the task of climb
ing all the way up to fifth to
locate the trouble.
‘No Problem
He says there's really "not
much of a problem around here,”
but lately he’s been chasing away
some fellow who has been shining
his spot light in the girls' win
dows. One night near the end of
last term, he caught several rnen
with a long ladder trying to climb
in the windows of second floor in
V unit.
Life really doesn't get very mo
notonous in the shift from 10:20
p.m. to 5:30 a.m., according to the
little man in glasses. The past
week he has been scrubbing and
waxing the floors in preparation
for Dad's Weekend. Many times
when tln-re are tests the next day
girls will take a break from their

studying to talk to him. On birth
days or other late celebrations,
"Mr. Byrne” uaually ia presented
with Home of the refreshments
and often Mrs. Stokes, head rcs
Ident, brings him a snack. He
never brings a lunch with him.
Born March 12, 1X98, the com
bination janitor-night watchman
haa two married daughters and
four grandchildren. Before taking
the position at Carson, Byrne wa.s
a logger in the woods around this
area. He now Jives on River Road
and drives to work each day.
Requests
The most frequent request
Byrne gets late at nights is for
change and he usually keeps some
on hand for the girls. One night
someone called twice asking for
Piluso's. He doesn't mind at all
letting University theater workers,
baby sitters, and Emerald workers
in late, and there is someone late
almost every night.
When asked what he liked best
about the job, Byrne replied,
"Watching the girls come in at
nights, I guess.”
