f: *Duc& ■ ByJolnWhiity 'I lie subject of college bow l games is coming to the fore again, much to the sorrow of the Pacific Coast Conference, as it is the host in what is supposedly the best of these post-season gridiron contests, the Rose Howl, and the representatives of tlic PCC have been unable to win this annual contest for several i \ cars past. The fact that the Big Ten champion each years has been able to come west and thoroughly humiliate the best that the Coast has to offer has led to a belief, steadily growing stronger, that ' the quality of football played on the Pacific Coast is not as good as that played in the Midwest. John McKay, who has played football in both the Big Ten and in tlie PCC, states that in his opinion there ii no difference ' in the caliber of ball played in the two conferences. McKay maintains that the relative strength of two grid leagues can ; not be accurately measured on the basis of one game a year played between the firs), place unit in each league. The Duck > backfield coach also said that a football team would have to go a long way before it could come up against a rougher outfit ^ tliftn California or Southern Cal. 1 Harris Says Illegal Financing at Fault In answer to the charges that post sea-on bowl games tend to make for professionalism among the contestants, Oregon's Di rector of Athletics, I.eo Harris, declared that the majority of the evils of athletic systems are largely caused by illegal fi nancing and proselyting and the effort- of misdirected alums. To get back to basketball, few Oregon fans realize that Web loot coach Bill Borchcr also acted as assistant coach to Pete Susiek, former Washington football great, at Marshfield High in Coos Bay. Susiek in turn aided Borcher during the hoop , season, Susiek was an all-state basketball selection in his senior year at North Bend High school, i Evidently thi- cooperative arrangement worked out very well, for Horclier’s basketball squad- v ere perennial favorites , in the state tournament each year, while the football teams turned out by the stocky Susiek were among those most feared in the state. Trotters Can be Beaten The fact that the Harlem Globetrotters are not unbeatable w a- proved by Johnny O'Brien and hi- Seattle university team mat's Monday night when O'Brien dropped in 43 counters to lead ! 1 is team to an 84-81 victory over the world-famous Trot ter-. led bv Goose Tatum. The University of Oregon is looking for two football op ponents for the 1953 and 1954 seasons. The dropping of inter ’ collegiate football by St. Mary’s college leaves the Ducks with an open date during each of these years. Both tilts were planned as home games for the Ducks, but the low seating capacity at Hayward Field may compel the Webfoots to accept games away from Eugene. One reason for the “buck fever” which reportedly seized Oregon's cage squad at Washington la -1 week was the constant tiding given the Ducks by the Husky rooters. Although no alibi for the poor showing made by coach Borcher’s squad is intended, it is certain that the poor taste displayed by the Husky supporters added nothing to the contest in the way of promoting good basketball or sportsmanlike conduct on the part of either of the teams. It is hard enough for a basketball quintet to play on a strange floor without a jumble of uncom plimentary comments from several thousand “excited rooters.” Duck Swimmers Never Lower Than Third (Ircgon's basketball squad should lie well prepared to face Northern I>iision competition next year. The pre-season sched ule set up for the Webfoots includes such teams as Wyoming, Stanford, University of Southern California, Utah, Brigham Young. Wisconsin, Iowa, Seattle university, and Portland uni versity. Since the Northern Division adopted a regular swimming schedule and annual ND meets started, Oregon’s swimming team has never finished lower than third in the conference. The Ducks have captured the first place title four times, second only to Washington, which has won the championship in ten • of the sixteen conference meets. The only schools, other than > Oregon and Washington, which have taken first place in the ND meet are Oregon State and WSC, each winning the cham pionship once. 1942 Was Good Swimming Year Oregon’s best year in the water sport was in 1937, when the Mike lloyinan-coachcd team won the Xorthern Division and l’CC titles as well as placing men, Jim Hurd and Bob Clinton on the All-American team. Jt was the second year as an All American choice for Ilurd. Oregon also won the ND and PCC titles in 1942. The Ducks won every first place in the Northern Division meet for the second time in history, and defeated the Olympic Club of San Francisco for the first loss suffered by that group in five years.
