Perfection Stressed
As Borcher Prepares
Squad for Huskies
By John Whitty
Perfection was the keynote at McArthur Court yesterday
Coach Hill Horcher rise'll up on hi- Oregon hoon.-ter while
preparing for the crucial series with t niversity of Washington
this weekend at Seattle. .
In contrast to the workouts of the past week, which saw
the Ducks leave the practice court in a weary condition at tl■■■
t-nii of each day. Borcher gave ms
charges only a few minutes of run
ning before dismissing them.
At the aturt of the session, the
skyscraping Oregon coach spent
a short time in working on tipping
and fast breaks from the foul line.
This was followed by a review of
Washington out-of-bounds plays.
Husky Offense
During the next quarter of an j
hour, a shirt team composed of
Bud Covey, Bob Hawes, ltunk Bnn
neman, Keith Farnam, and Jim
Vranizan worked the offensive
style of the Huskies in a dummy
scrimmage against the skin team
The latter outfit was made up of
Ken Hunt. Hon Bottler. Ken Weg
ner, Barney Holland, Bob Peter
son, and Chet Noe.
The six players exchanged post- j
tions and alternated frequently. ,
The order of play was also revers- j
ciI when the skin team took over j
the duty of acting as the Washing- 1
ton squad. Both Peterson and,
Hunt found the basket several
times during the workout,
Borcher also made use of the
junior varsity unit under the di
ruction of assistant coach Don
Kirsch. Various combinations of
JV basketeers worked offensive
and defensive formations at both
ends of the floor against the two
units named above. The only per
sonnel change made was that of
Barney Holland, who was moved
to the “shirt" team, spending time
at both the foiward and guard
positions.
JV"* vs. Varsity
The next item on Coach Boreh
er's drill schedule was a full
court pressing defense applied by
the junior varsity against the var
sity cagers. Perhaps because of
their greater experience, t h e
first stringers had little difficulty
in keeping the ball away from the
younger prospects.
In the only hard-fought action
of the day, a varsity unit tom
posed of Streeter, Peterson. Noe,
Hunt, and Wegner had a hard time
winning out over a JV team by a
]4-9 score. IJon Seigmund led the
losers with five points and kept
the varsity iioopsters on their toes
with his ball-hawking tactics. The
other four members of the squud
were Howard Page, Wayne John
son, Bob Ilinman, and Hugh Mars
er.
After this scrimmage, Borcher
put his first five varsity men
through about five minutes of
“three-man killer," a conditioning
exercise which justly deserves its
name.
