———i. ... —■ Sty S(U (furmety KonU Sport* Editor We see where the NCAA meeting in Cincinnati was on!) partially successful in its efforts to de emphasize college foot hall. Instead of eliminating spring football practice entirely they restricted such practices to 20 sessions in each sport. A to financial aid to athletes, they put control of it more secure!) under individual institution-, and adotped a principle calling for sound academic standards. The platoon system will go on as before, in spite of effort* t'i abolish it. A resolution ua> passed bua large margin to limit the number of college grid games which will be televised in 1 '>52. , As a whole, the action of the convention was somewhat more mild than that advocated by the Pacific Coast Conference. As Conference Commissioner Victor C. Schmidt told us while or the campus last fall, the PCC favored complete abolition ol spring drills and the platoon system, and more stringent con tfiol of aid to athletes. 1 a hen as a whole the action of the convention will not result in any drastic changes in the position of football, and the Coa*t ( onfercncc "ill have to develop a more determined attitude toward the next Rose Howl game, for they "ill get no help from the rule-makers. Pete Impresses Strife Register -C.ttard Sports Kditor Dick St rite* says in his column “11 ighclimber" that Hob Peterson is without a doubt the finest rebound man he has ever seen on a basketball court. Strite says that Clarence Hannon of Army is listed as the current NCAA bailer, with a 20.7 average, but for only three games. Peterson has an average of 20.5 in 1 1 games. In nine of those games he has had 20 or more, and his highest was a Pacific Coast Con ference record of 25, in the second WSC game. Strite goes on to explain a little-known aspect of the way the NCAA scores rebounds. Most people think that rebounds are tredited only when the ball is taken directly off the backboard after a missed shot. There are times that rebounds are credited after the ball has hit the floor once. Also, some rebounds art credited as “team rebounds," because the ball is tipped back and forth among teammates. - Strite is of the opinion that 90 per cent or more of Peterson’s p hounds arc off the backboards directly. now I hey stand W’ltilf we arc on the subject of >tatistics, here is a run-down of Duck basketball figures fur the first 14 games: g fg ft mft Peterson, f, lloe, c Hunt, g Wegner, g Streeter, f Holland, f-g Farnam, f Hawes, g Bottler, g-f Vranizan, f Bonneman, c Covey, g Phillips, f Page, g Sogers, c 14 14 14 14 14 14 12 11 13 11 9 10 3 1 1 90 67 53 40 32 14 9 12 11 10 6 27 43 34 24 18 14 15 6 2 1 0 0 20 30 16 14 16 9 6 2 2 1 1 0 0 9 4 9 6 2 0 0 2 0 pf tp avg 53 207 14.E 36 177 12.£ 25 140 10.C 33 104 82 36 34 30 28 22 14 5 3 0 0 50 12 23 12 24 16 6 3 2 1 0 7.4 5.5 2.e 2.4 2.7 2.2 2.C 1.6 .5 .4 ,C ,C Globetrotters Coming to Town In case you didn’t know it, the Harlem Globetrotters are coni ng to town the 22nd of January to play a team of selected ex ■ollege stars. New additions to this squad are Roger Wiley and vlcl Krause, a pair of former Oregon luminaries. They art low in the ranks of high school coaches, as Wiley is in his bird campaign at Bend, while Krause is in his first year al vlilwaukie high school. Wiley’s Lava Bears have won their listrict crown and have performed in the state tournament. Wiley was an all-Northern Division choice in 1948 and 1945 is a lanky high-scoring center. Krause made the all-Division econd team in 1951 for John Warren’s second place outfit. Mel vas one of the most fierce competitors at his guard position hat McArthur Court has ever seen, and wound up the 1951 eason with a .376 field goal shooting percentage, which is little hort of phenomenal. Bill Borchcr says his daughter Sandra, who is in the third lade, is an avid scorekeeper for Oregon games, lie says his /ife doesn’t think she is very accurate, but he thinks she does bry well considering the rapid-fire scoring. Gamma Takes 'B’ Game in Overtime By Jim Mahoney Intramural basketball, "B” league variety, opened with a bang I'relay afternoon a spec tators witnessed a series of fast moving games which more than made up in amateur en thusiasm what they lacked in tie- way of professional and technical excellence. Gamrna Hall defeated Campbell Club 25 to 21 in the only overtime play of the day. The Minturn Hall vh. Stan Hay Hall thriller favored Minturn at 39 to 4. Almost as bad • Phi Delta Theta 42, Tau Kappa Epsilon 20. Sigma Chi won 20 to 11 over Beta Theta Pi. Alpha Tau Omega bumped Phi Kappa Psi 13 to 9. Sherry Ross-Omega also pulled 13 to 9 from McChesney Hall. Gamma In Overtime In a play well calculated to keep you in suspense, Gamma Hall's B team outlasted Campbell Club's B team in overtime. Kd Heino sank the tying basket with seconds to go wrapping it up at 21 all as the whistle blew. Gamma came back in the overtime period on two quick baskets to provide the edge. High scoring honors were shared bv Brothers of the losers and Ted Mahony of the winners with 6 apiece. The Minturn-Stan Kay debacle featured a three platoon system by .Minturn which undoubtedly helped them attain such a fantastic seor ing margin. It kept the opposing team in a state of constant con fusion, i.e., who was playing for whom, and who was checking who, i or whom ... they never found out either. Bob Mulrhead counted 12 j easy points for the winners. I In a closely fought, low scoring j game Sherry Ross-Omega bested | McCheaney Hall 13 to 9. Weed ol j the winners emerged as the high i man with 7 points and Mel West fall led the losers with 5. Sigma Chi-Beta Tilt The Sigma Chi-Beta Theta Pi game was played Saturday morn ing. Postponed from Friday night because of interference by Rush week activities, it was won by Sigma Chi 20 to 11. Jim Calder wood was high scorer for the game with 10 counters for the Sigma Chis. Phi Delta Theta obviously had j scouted Minturn, for they came up : with what amounted to two pla toons of their own. Though not as flashly as Minturn, the Phi Delts walked all over the Tekes. Eugene Lewis scored 11 points for the winners as did Moorse of TKE. Alpha Tau Omega, as usual, pre sented the largest rooting section for a game whose score against Phi Kappa Psi, 13 to 9, belies the Interesting action of the game.
