Barbara Bates is another of the Homecoming queen finalists whose major is in the field of art. She is | a fifth year student majoring in interior design in the school of , architecture. She hopes to continue j her work in the field in a profes sional capacity. Upon graduation from Oregon she plans to work in Portland. Before coming to the university of Oregon she attended Willamette University for two years. She i graduated from Salem high school j in 1917. Since coming to Oregon j she has participated in several campus activities, including presi dency of Alpha Chi Omega, chair man of the Student Union cultural, committee, steering committee of : associated students of architecture j and allied arts and secretary of the student chapter of profession in terior designers. The 5-foot b-incli, I2-vear old j brunette enjoys all types of sports, \ including spectator sports, such as football and basketball. "I’m a lousy skier," she comments, "but I love to ski. My work in the archi tecture school has to be both my main tiobby and my interest for it is very time consuming." The blue eyod Salemite is working toward her graduation in June from the five-year architecture school. Miss Bates expressed confidence in the 1951 Homecoming plans. She said, "This year tho Homecom ing schedule is geared so that the students will have time and will want to be hosts to the returning alums. The difficulties arising from the Homecoming dates were ade quately taken care of by the house poll which was taken.” LYN HARTLEY November 23 may mean the day of the 1951 Homecoming celebra tion foi most people, but for Lyn Hartley it will also be the day on which she celebrates her 19th birthday. The Delta Gamma sopho more holds the title of Sweetheart of Sigma Chi, which she won dur ing her freshman year at the Uni versity. This 112-pound, 5-foot 6-inch brunette is formerly from Port land, but now lives in San Diego, California. She graduated in 1950 from Hoover high in the California seaport city. A major in prc-nurs mg. Mir-s Hartley plans to be ar. anesthetist. After graduation from the Oregon Nursing school she plrfhs to take one extra year of specialization in anesthesia at Cook County hospital in Chicago. At the present time she does Red Cross volunteer nurses' aide work at Sacred Heart hospital. Miss Hartley's college activities include rally board, Whiskerino clean-up and promotion commit tees and Dads’ Day promotion committee. Her outside interests lie chiefly in sailing and bowling. In speaking of the Homecoming schedule for this year. Miss Hart ley slated, "I think as a whole the schedule has been worked out satisfactorily; especially consider ing the disadvantages present. With everyone's cooperation and the sincere effort put forth by all persons concerned, I'm sure Home coming will be the success it has always been in past years.” She further expressed the opin ion that "Frances Gillmore de serves a great deal of praise for her apt handling of an awkward situation.” Stagecraft Class Discovers 'Bugs' In Friendly Hall Discovery of “English depart ment bugs” in the basement of Friendly hall was announced Thursday by a fundamentals of stagecraft class. The hugs, about an inch in length and black with six legs, were exposed when the class pre pared to move old scenery stored in the basement. It was reported that the bugs have flourished on a diet of “surplus knowledge from the English department on the floors above.” However, students ill the biol ogy department upon examina tion of the insect, railed it a periplaneta Americana or what is commonly known as a cock roach.
