Oregon Freshman Football Candidates Include Former Prep Quarterbacks Quarterbacks George Shaw of Grant High in Portland and Wally Russell of Eugene High rank among the top freshmen gridders who have selected the University of Oregon for their college football careers. Shaw, a 1950 Oregon high school all-stater, has three other brothers who have performed in college grid circles. Brother Jerry, a 225 pcund tackle, the heaviest man on the Duck squad, earned a Web foot letter in 1950 and is back for wore action this fall. j AT OREGON EVEN FELNIA ST. Russell was selected as the most valuable player in the an nual Shrine high school (fame in Portland. He led the Eugene Axemen to the district cham pionship in 1950. Duck halfback candidates in clude two other freshmen from Eugene High, Merritt and Manning Barber. The Barber twins starred in the 1951 Shrine game. Man ning, an all-state prep selection, plays at right half, and Merritt performs at the opposite position. Eugene High also furnishes a freshman fullback candidate. John Reed saw three years of Army service after graduating from the local prep institution. Reed, who played football for two seasons at Fort Ord and one season at Nc'.vberg (New York) Preparatory, the son of Dick Reed, former Oregon eapitan assistant coach. Another yearling, Lou Kollias of Elizabeth, Pennsylvania, might see linebacking action as a defen sive fullback. End Candidates Freshman end candidates in clude Farrell Albright, Dick Dav enport. Harold Reeve, and Dean Van Leuven.
