"Lcn” Casanova. Oregon's new gridiron mentor, is now entering his sixth season as a college head coach. After four seasons at Santa Clara I'niversity, Coach Casa nova moved to Pittsburgh for the 1950 campaign and trans ferred to Eugene one year later. Casanova placed football and baseball at Santa t lura (luting his college days. He opened m.u coachiiig career in 1928 at Belniont Military Academy in California, and he later become head coach at Sequoia High in Redwood City During his five seasons at Sequoia, his grldders won 36 games, lost 10, and tied 3. They captured three league titles and never finished below third place. Casanova moved to Santa Clara, where he was an assistant coach under Buck Shaw from 1936 to 1942, when he joined the Navy. He also was Santa Clara's head base ball coach for four seasons. Tough Schedules Released from the Navy with the rank of commander in 1946, Casanova accepted the head coach ing position at Santa Clara. His Bronco elevens were invariably faced with tough schedules, but Casanova elevated Santa Clara to i place among the lending Inde pendent squads in the nation. Despite the scheduling of such mighty grid titans as Michigan State, California, and Okla homa, the Broncos won 21, lost 13, and tied 4 la-fore their suc cessful coach was lured away to Pittsburgh. One of the high lights of his Santa Clara career was the 21-13 upset triumph over Kentucky In the 1930 Or ange Bowl clash. The 1930 Panthers also faced a suicide schedule, and just before the season began, a number of Casanova's top prospects became members of the armed services. Pitt won one victory, suffered eight setbacks. In addition to Casanova, the Duck coaching staff also includes three other head men in the major sports John Warren, basketball; Don Kirsch, baseball; and Bill Bowerman, track. I.K.N C ASANOVA Warren graduated from the Uni versity <>f Oiegon in 192H, moved to Astoria High for sevt n phe nomenal years of football and bas ketball coaching, and then returned to the University in 1935. Warren's Astoria hoop squads won 300 games and lost only 36, capturing the state championship in 1930, 1932. 1934. and 1938. football squads seized 56 wins while losing 14 and were unde1 rented In 1928, 1929, and 1931.
