VAN DYKE C, ARDENS Phone 4-8411 'Stardust' Lecture Given By Physicist in Forum By Bob Ford “A galaxy is a vast rotation of stars, which is very flat and thin,” E. G. Ebbighausen, associate professor of physics, stated at 7 :30 p.m. Wednesday in the Browsing Room of the Student Union, in approaching his subject of ‘‘The Space Between the Stars.” Ebbighausen explained that the earth is a part of the galaxy, and that there is a tremendous concentration of stars in the nu cleus of the galaxy. “The earth is thirty thousand light years from the center of the galaxy,” Ebbighausen con tinued. The space between the stars is in credibly vast in comparison to the space occupied by the stars them aelves, the physics instructor ex plained. Ebbighausen advised the audi ence to observe the Milky Way on -a. clear night during the summer. If we look toward the nucleus of, the galaxy, we will observe the stars to be brighter, but as we look away from the nucleus of the ga laxy, the stars become fainter, the lecturer said. This lecture was the seventh in the Lecture-Forum Series, which is sponsored by the Association of Patrons and Friends of the Uni versity of Oregon Library.
