History Lecture
Will Introduce
John Caughey
Just what is the importance of
analysis and criticism in the study
of history?
Dr. John Caughey, editor of the
Pacific Historical Review, and
formerly a professor at the Uni
versity of California at Los Ange
les will answer that question at
a lecture Thursday in 207 Chap
man. He will discuss “The Critical
Factor in the Study of History,”
under the sponsorship of the Uni
versity Lecture committee.
Dr. Caughey has made the study
of the critical factor under a grant
from the Rockefeller Foundation.
The critical factor of analysis and
criticism is set against the usual
mere recording (^historical events.
The lecture will reveal some of the
results learned by Dr. Caughey
during the course of his study
which is not yet completed, said
Dean Eldon Johnson of the College
of Liberal Arts, which will co-spon
sor the lecture.
A graduate of the University of
Texas, Dr. Caughey received his
doctorate from the University of
California. He recently wrote an
article for Harper’s Magazine con
cerning the loyalty-oath controver
sy at the California school entitled
“University in Jeopardy.”
Dr. Caughey has also written
“History of the Pacific Coast;”
“California” (a history); "Hubert
Howe Bancroft, Historian of the
West;” and “Gold in the Corner
stone,” a story concerning the gold
in California.
