BiancajPart Second Role
For UO Theater Veteran
rsy non smitn
“She’s a prostitute,” is the three
word description tlpt Jo DeLap,
junior in speech, has for Bianca,
the role she plays in the Univer
sity Theater production of “Othel
lo,” which opens Dec. 1.
"But a very nice girl, anyway,”
Miss DeLap adds. “She’s really full
of fun, frivolity, and gaiety.”
This is the actress’ first attempt
at Shakespeare, her only other
University Theater acting assign
ment being Antiope in last sea
son’s favorite, "The Warrior’s Hus
band.” But the two roles are op
posites.
“Antiope was afraid of men,”
Miss DeLap explained. “Bianca
chases them.”
The man she chases is Cassio,
played by Don Doak.
“But Cassio doesn’t love Bianca,
even though Bianca throws her
self at him. He just thinks she’s
too low for him.”
The role is small but good, Miss
D^ap thinks. She’s particularly
happy about her third scene, in
which “I’ve learned of Cassio be
ing wounded, and Iago tries to in
volve me in helping to contrive the
attack upon Cassio. I just lie on
the steps sobbing.”
But does she finally get her
man?
“Oh nobody worries about that,”
she explains. “I just lie on 'the
steps for awhile, and then run off
sobbing. What an exit!”
While this is Miss DeLap’s sec
ond acting job, it represents the
10th consecutive University theat
er production that she’s .worked
on, in one way or another.
“It all started with 'The Show
Off’ in old Guild Hall, the last
regular production in the old theat
er. I followed the plays from there
into the new theater.”
She’s worked on each produc
tion, regular and summer season,
working at every job from assist
ant director through stage crews
and acting. She’s worked on lights,
props, construction, box office, and
cloakroom crews—in fact “every
thing but the sound crew.”
Her biggest backstage assign
ment was stage manager for
“Martha,” the largest production
to be presented so far on the new
stage.

The theater has kept her busy,
but she still finds time for the
activities of Pi Delta Phi, the
French honorary, and Phi Beta,
music and speech honorary.
And what is she going to do in
the next theater production ?
"Oh, I don’t know. Maybe sweep
the lobby carpet—I haven’t done
that yet.”
