To Record 'Sing'
"Lot's Sing America” will be a
feature of the community sing to
; be hold at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday
i in the Student Union Ballroom.
It will bo second in a series of
eight radio shows rebroadcast by
i the experimental program of the
• university radio studios under its
j “Experiment. . .Radio."
Don Porter, KUGN announcer,
| will act as master of ceremonies.
! Solo parts during the “everybody
• sing” will be handled by Joy Grim
1 stad and Lorin Miller, while
j Maude Garnett, associate profes
, sor of public school music, will
! be-song leader. Organ music will
i be provided by Zonda Montgomery,
i instructor of music at Willamette
! High School.
\ The purpose of the “Experiment.
' , .Radio” scries is to “create new
I types of radio broadcasts or to
revive old shows,” co-producer Jack
i. Vaughn said Monday.
“The whole series is being re
corded for later release over sta
tion KOAC. and more important,
to be made available to all uni
' versity radio stations across the
nation as representative of what
the University of Oregon studio s
do," Vaughn remarked.
The program is open to both
students and townspeople. Admis
sion is. free.
Metzler Wins Fee Scholarship
Kenneth Metzler, senior in
journalism, has been chosen win
ner of a fee scholarship awarded
annually by the Eugene chapter
qf the American Newspaper Guild,
Gordon A. Sabine, dean of the
School of Journalism, announced
Thursday.
Metzler, an associate editor of
the Emerald, was unanimously
chosen by a joint committee of the
Guild and School of Journalism.
The scholarship, amounting to
$132, was awarded on the basis of
three items—aptitude for the field,
financial need, and scholastic
standing—in that order.
Now attending the Miami Beach,
Fla. national convention of Sig
ma Delta Chi, men's professional
journalism fraternity, Metzler will
be graduated at the end of sum
mer session, 1951. He has worked
his entire way through, more than
three years at the University. Last
summer he was acting editor of
the Medford News, a weekly, and
reporter on the Roseburg News
Review, a daily.
His past activities on the Eme
rald have included jobs as report
er, assistant news editor, and news
editor. Now vice-president of Sig-j
ma Delta Chi, Metzler was award
ed the SDX award as the out
standing sophomore worker on the
Emerald two years ago.
With an overall grade point
average of 2.68, Metzler has an
average in journalism courses of
3.17.
AWS Christmas
Party Petition Due
Petitions for the AWS Christ
mas Charity party are now being
called for, according to Barbara
Stevenson, AWS president.
Chairmanships open are general
chairman of the entire event, food,
decorations, publicity, collections,
program, invitations, and distri
bution.
Petitions, open to all women,
may be picked up in the Office of
Student Affairs. All petitions are
due to either Miss Stevenson, Kap
pg.* Alpha Theta, or Eve Overback,
Hendricks, by 5 p.m. Wednesday.
An. Ohio man was arrested for
stealing 200 slabs of bacon from a
truck. It isn’t wise to take sides.
