Myrtle Creek Biggest news here, though it was news all over Oregon, was the weather. Myrtle Creek fell victim to a flood surpassing all others in the memory of the oldest residents. All communications were crippled, roads were blocked, power cut off and telephones disconnected, trains and buses did not run as roads and bridges were washed out, and water systems were knocked out. Only one death had been reported. One item missing that was not mourned over was the city dump which was completely washed away. North Bond-Coos Bay A large cash prize is being of fered to the high school that turns out the largest percentage of vot ers at the Nov. 7 election. The Get Out-The-Vote contest is being spon sored by the Coos Bay Harbor and competing schools are Marshfield and North Bend high. Business men of the two cities are contri buting $5 each toward the prize and about $300 had been collected by Wednesday of last week with more expected. There is consider able rivalry between the schools and all manner of plans were be ing used in working toward the goal of winning. Ontario The new memorial to those who served in World War II was dedi cated October 29. Joe Saito, a vet eran of the war and regional offi cial in the Japanese American Citi zen’s League, presented the me morial to the city of Ontario. Mrs. Hosada of Emmett, mother of three sons who served in the war, two of whom were killed, unveiled the monument and a floral wreath was placed on it by Mrs. Thomas Itami, sister of Jero Kanetomi, who died serving with the famous 442nd di vision. Pallette to Explain Teacher Placement The work of the teacher place ment service in securing jobs for students going into teaching will be explained by Earl Pallette, di rector, at a meeting of all prospec tive teachers at 3 p.m., Nov. 14 in the University High School audi torium. 'Modern Writing' Topic of Lecture William Carlos Williams, a prac ticing physician who has manag ed to do a great deal of writing in his spare time, will give a lec ture titled ‘‘Modern Writing” at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the Adelaide Church Memorial Browsing Room of the Student Union. Carlisle Moore, professor of English, will introduce the speak er and lead the discussion follow ing his talk. Everyone is invited to attend, according to Miss Bernice Rise, who is in charge of the Browsing Room at the SU and the arrange ments for the lecture. Mr. Williams is on the campus this week working with the crea tive writing classes criticizing short stories and poetry. He him self has written a number of short stories, essays, and novels, win ning several awards. An exhibit of his work will be on display today and tomorrow in the Browsing Room. Portland Concert To Feature Sayao Featured vocalist with the Port land Symphony Orchestra in their concert next Monday night in the Portland Public auditorium will be Bidu Sayao, Metropolitan Opera soprano. James Sample will direct the orchestra. The following Monday, a special attraction not on the subscription series, a program of Rodgers and Hammerstein selections will be pre sented by the orchestra with four vocal soloists, the Portland Sym phonic Choir. Gill box of fice Thursday. 25 Bridge Teams Enter Tournament Approximately 25 teams repre senting living groups will enter the first all-campus bridge tournament sponsored by the recreation com mittee of the Student Union, Chairman Steve Englemann an nounced Monday. The tournament will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Stu dent Union, with the teams divid ed into two sections. All teams must be there at that time, Engle mann said. Organizations wishing to enter a team should contact Englemann at the Sigma Phi Epsilon house. Originally the tournament was to be held on two nights, but few er teams entered than expected, Englemann explained. Prizes will be presented to win ning groups and individuals. A Parish, N.
