French Film Tells
Of Adolescent _
Love During War
By Don Smith
A beautiful tale of adolescent
love is “Devil in the Flesh,” first
foreign film club attraction of
this year. Now playing at the
Mayflower through Wednesday,
the French film artistically hand
les the delicate story of a 17-year
old schoolboy’s romance with an
older woman.
The film relates a happy story
that leads to sadness; a story that
depicts the impetuosity, the im
maturity, the angers and jealous
ies, the selfishness and unselfish
ness that make up the deep love of
the two persons.
Micheline Presle and Gerald
Philipe are sensitive and under
standing in the lead roles; their
performances are smooth, quiet
and distinctive. It is their believ
able performances that add great
ly to the appeal of the story.
It is a tale of love during the
first- world war. Francois, the
youth, is enraptured by the beauty
and humaness of Marthe. He im
petuously woos her, and later when
she tells him she is engaged, Fran
cois realizes it would be better
for Marthe if he left her. She
marries the soldier she was en
gaged to and, after her marriage
she runs into Francois once again.
The romance is rekindled, really,
it had never died. The war draws
to a close and the lovers realize
that Marthe’s husband will return;
that their affair must end. Marthe
dies in giving birth to Francois’
child, the child that Marthe’s
husband will raise because he be
lieves it is his.
The film is produced with ex
cellent taste in all respects. It tells
of the romance with what Time
magazine has termed “almost un
bearable intimacy.” It is a love
story filmed with simplicity and
power.

Co-chairman Barbara Howard
estimated the total sales would run
close to $70 for the entire group of

to want to talk it off.
