Exuberant Emeraldite Elucidates
Extensive Election Explanation
By JO GILBERT
Don’t be confused! We have here
a simple elemental explanation of
the preferential voting system
which ^ill be used again this year.
This type of voting system is
designed for elections where there
are more candidates than offices,
to better represent the opinion of
the voters.
Basically, it works like this: can
didates are voted for in the order
of the voters’ preference. There are
four ASUO council offices vacant
with five candidates running for
them this year at the University.
Candidates may be voted for, ir
regardless of any affiliation, in
any order. There will be no “lost”
votes.
In other words, though Joe Sch
moe may be running on the West
ern party ticket as a number two
candidate he can win the election.
And similarly, if Bessie Blatz is
running for number three on the
Eastern Party ticket and “Lucky”
Lager is running for number one
on the Western Party ticket, if the
votes fall differently than as pro
vided on the party slate, Lager
could get one with Bessie two.

ber one position has reached his
quota of votes, the first place votes
for the other candidates count in
determining the winner of number
two position. When the number two
position has been discovered, the
number one and two votes of the
three remaining are counted in de
termining the number three officer
and then the number one, two, and
three votes are added with the
number four votes in determining
the winner of number four posi
tion. The final losing candidate is

applicable to the class elections.

TNE Present
(Continued from ('age one)
that such a group exists nationally,
that national fraternity leaders are
firmly opposed to it as a subversive,
rotten group, and I will state again
that it does exist on the campus.
“The cause of good student gov
ernment can be damaged irrepar
ably by such attempts as this pres
ent one to make a joke of such a
group as TNE. As long as the stu
dents act like infants, it's for sure
the administration will treat them
as such,” he said.

aid M. DuShane, who asked police
and firemen to return home. Du
Shane told an Emerald reporter,
“My primary concern was to get
everything broken up before any
one got hurt, and that's why I asked
the policemen and firemen to
leave.”
DuShane was waterbagged by
students in a nearby living organi
zation while on the scene.
Chief of Police Keith L. Jones
stated that no further action was
planned by his department. He said,
“It was just one of those things,
and it got out of hand.”
No actual violence was reported
other than the brief hosing. Stu
dents on the scene claimed that per
mission had been obtained from the
police department to use half of
Alder street between 14th and 15th
for the dance.
