DUCKTRACKS I By TOM KING Here's a smattering of sport; shorts gathered by direct wire from the campus underground . . . Gargantuan Sam Nevills, who played a lot of tackle for Jim Aiken’s W ebfoots the last two seasons, plans to do a take a flyer at wfestling before he joins the Chicago Bears later this year . . . Nevills, who is plenty plenty agile despite his heft, will go into his grunt and groan act around Chicago—which is home . . . It’ll be by way of picking up some pocket change and getting trim be fore he joins George Halas, Johnny Lujack & Co. later on. Father VanBrocklin, Yet It's a bouncing new baby for Norm Van Brocklin and his wife, their first . . . The ex-Oregon All-American ace is complet ing his studies here before rejoining the Los Angeles Rams . . . He’s also lending a hand now with the quarterbacks out on the lowei practice field. The word on Don Kirscli's Ducks is that 1) they’re much bet ter than last year and will be right in the thick of it, and 2) they .will be in a two-way struggle for the basement . . . bather con flicting, but that’s what two veteran abservers reported after watching Oregon hammer out a nifty 4 and 1 won-lost record thus for . . . The fact is that the boys are green and the hitting isn't too certain . . . But the pitching seems to be stronger and that, plus the catching, gives the Ducks something to go on . . . In fact, Oregon is pretty good down the middle . . . Joe Segura behind the plate is a young chap but he has enough polish and is backed up pretty steadily by Jack Smith ... In the box, there's Mel Krause, Ex-Footballer DeWayne Johnson, Big Jimmy Hanns, and Homer Brobst . . . The keystone twosome, Ray Coley and Darryll Nelson, is still learning. But it’s potentially a strong combination—and Coley jif&Dmight happen to be the best shortstop in the divi sion . . . Dick Salter, another fugitive from the grid ranks, pa trols center and between him and Duane Owens, the Ducks won’t lack much there ... So Oregon isn’t too bad up the mid dle ... Which means it should be in the running all the way ... Any club with good pitching won’t get pinned too often . . . Johnson, Krause, Hanns, Brobst . . . Sounds good . . . The lo cal populace will know more this weekend ... The Ducks go to bat in a stiff test when they face Buck Bailey’s circus from Pullman ... WSC is rated with the big boys this year and it’ll be up to Oregon to trim them down to size. Fell vs. Henthorne On the track side, the big buzzing is still mostly about Mr. Bill Fell, the gentleman who makes his limbs swish at such a furious pace . . . The big question is whether Fell will be more furious than reigning ND sprint king Dave Henthorne in the 100 and 220-yard dashes ... Right now Fell seems to have the slight edge, if any . . . But final decision must be reserved until the boys work themselves down fine, conditionally speaking . . . Most delectable athletic offering of the spring season may well be the Washington State cinderfest here April 22 . . . The big one that day will be between Cougar Bill Parnell and Jack Hutchins ... In two meetings last winter, the boys traded vic tories ... Of course, the whole set up depends on whether Bill Bowerman chooses to send Hutchins in against Parnell or save him for another distance event. Latest word on the possibility of intramural boxing is that the proposal will be brought up at the next meeting of the house in tramural representatives ... If approved, the sport, it is said, will be established on an IM basis . . . And, then, if that works out satisfactorily, varsity boing would be next. Time Trials Today (Continued from page four) NCAA regulations contain no rules concerning traveling squad other than no more than three men will be entered in a single event, ex cept relay matches. Northern Division dual meets consist of 14 individual events, plus the mile relay. Under NCAA rules, k this would allow a total of 46 men enter competition. Howard Lemon, Oregon athletic business manager, could not be reached for comment. Leo Harris, director of athletics of the Univer sity, was unavailable also. He is in California on a business trip. - National Vice President To Inspect Phi Beta Mrs. Edith Gibbs Vaughn, grand national first vice president of Phi Beta, women’s music and speech fraternity, will visit the Oregon campus Saturday to inspect Pi chapter of Phi Beta. The group is planning a luncheon in her honor at the smorgasbord Saturday noon. Members of the active chapter, alumnae, and the patroness cabinet will attend.
