The Lineman (Continued from page two) ly wants to live, and live the life she was used to before the war. Now, she is apparently willing- to do anything to get off the island. However, because of the tech nique Rossellini has used, Karin’s character is shown in brief glimpses. It does not develop, the audience cannot see her char acter grow, rather she appears at times to act without motivation or reason, in direct contradiction to a previous action just a few film minutes earlier. This is not entirely the fault of Miss Berg man, who plays the role in the early parts of the film with some thing just slightly less than her usual perfection, rather it is the work of the scenarist and director who insist upon splitting up the film. It seems as if Rossellinis’ tech nique of photographing things as they come, of writing the script as he goes along, of improving a great deal, did not pay off as well in this film as it has in some of his earlier works. Photography in the film was realistic and sometimes superb, but it generally had the appear ance of being taken on a bad day with poor light and bad film. This again, perhaps, is realism I am not accustomed to, and therefore I cannot appreciate it. But to me, it looked like pretty raunchy deal ism. “Stromboli” had moments of excitement, but stretches of dull ness. It had some beauty and ar tistry, but a lot of patch-work. It succeeded in getting across the effect of a woman disgusted with her life, but failed to make me realize that she could find peace by returning to her island village. It seemed like a rough copy of a product that has great poten tialities. But a rough copy should n’t be foisted off as a finished piece-.
